Owls swoop for Sunderland's Wickham

Wednesday are in talks to sign Sunderland striker Connor Wickham on loan until the end of the season, according to reports.

BBC Radio Sheffield's Paul Walker has received confirmation from Owls chairman Milan Mandaric that the club is trying to strike a deal with the Black Cats to bring the former Ipswich Town man to Hillsborough.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill is prepared to let Wickham move elsewhere for regular first team action after the arrival of Danny Graham forced him down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.

O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo: "A couple of clubs have enquired about him and I`ve spoken to his agent as well.

"It`s one where it`s an outfield player in a position where we`ve got a couple of options at this moment.

"Now that Connor has got a bit of momentum going, having played in the first team, we want to ensure that progress continues.'

Wednesday brought in Leroy Lita on-loan in the January transfer window from Swansea City but Owls boss Dave Jones is seemingly keen to add more attacking threat to his squad.

Wickham, 19, has made nine appearances for the Premier League club this season but has only scored one goal.

Could be a useful addition but according to the main BBC page, O'Neill 'has made it clear the object of Wickham going out on loan would be simply for him to play games.' Which sounds dandy if he plays well and compliments the team, but are we risking another Bothroyd/ Barkley situation where he'll keep his place even if he plays cr*p and the team lose matches? And besides, I thought playing Lita with Antonio and bringing Madine on was starting to look effective.
