Owls sign Wolves defender Johnson

Owls sign Wolves defender Johnson

Wednesday have completed the signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Roger Johnson on a three-month loan deal.

The 30-year-old suffered relegation from the Championship with Wolves last season but has Premier League experience with Birmingham City and Owls boss Dave Jones knows the player well after buying him for Cardiff City.

Johnson's arrival is timely with Owls skipper Anthony Gardner recently sidelined for a number of months and Jones believes Wednesday have captured a top talent.

"We are pleased that Roger is here because he is a fantastic talent,' he said.

"I know the lad well, he did fantastic for me at Cardiff, he is a very good player and we have been given the opportunity to bring him here and we are grateful for that.

"He knows what my principles are and what I expect from my players and he`ll know he`ll have to fight for his place.

"We have got a very, very good player, he has the stage here to perform and it`s up to him to go out and there take this opportunity."

The former Wycombe Wanderers product has suffered three straight relegations, with Birmingham from the top flight and then back-to-back relegations with Wolves and has not been part of Kenny Jackett's plans this season.

Johnson has penned a loan deal at Hillsborough until January 2014 and is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday's trip to his former club Birmingham.

Trying hard not to make any Bothroyd comparisons here, but it ain't easy! I suppose one difference being Johnson may well have a point or two to prove whereas that other loser clearly thought he was doing us, and football in general, a favour. Still, keeping fingers crossed (definitely no good for arthritis) this move is probably major in financial terms, so I'm hoping it works out. Not sure about DJ's comment though, that he'll need to fight for a place in the side. Got a feeling he'll be a permanent fixture between now and January whether he delivers the goods or not. Probably at Llera's expense, which is more the pity.

I recall Devon_Owl suggesting his best XI (when all are fit) a couple of weeks back. I didn't post my own version because a) I wouldn't argue too much with his, and b) I thought we might've brought in a couple of additions before the Yeovil game, thus rendering my selections obsolete. Well we didn't, but aside from all that I'd have put Madine in there (thinking there was a chance of him getting off - duh!). Anyroad, now that it's too late to make a scrap of difference this the OurMaurice XI specifically picked to send Yeovil packing: Bywater; Buxton, Batth, Jones... Sorry, start again: Kirkland; Palmer, Zayatte, Llera, Reda; Antonio, McCabe, Semedo, Helan; Maguire, Nuhiu. Only more of a 4-2-4 or 4-3-3 with Helan dropping to midfield, and have Lavery, Maghoma & JJ standing by to mix it up a bit. You might notice the total absence of both Coke & Prutton. That's no accident, by the way. ps I see both Roger Johnson & Olifinjana turned out in a friendly yesterday, I'm afraid neither would get in 'my' team at the minute. Darron Gibson would, but what are the chances of that ever happening?

What is the Fat Controller up to? He appears to be going through a list of ex-Cardiff players, non of which IMO cut the mustard. As a aside, I heard the Rotherham manager apologised to the fans for getting it wrong in the first half last Saturday but was big enough to change it round for the second 45.

Just copied this off the Star - made me smile and Lord knows i need something to smile about - RJ is capable of being our best centre back. This is a big chance for him, he has a lot to prove - as long as he sticks to the task, doesn't accept the list of best boozers and clubs from Madine. Could we make a team from the writers on this website, We have Johnny Fantham on the wing, Vic Mobley at CH and Dooley up front, plus of course an honorary place for Our Maurice

Quote:- Jones brought in Wolves defender Roger Johnson on loan this week, in a bid to strengthen a defence which has yet to keep a clean sheet. (Says he needs a few weeks to settle in so what immediate use is he; poor lamb). He has also signed Manchester City youngster George Swann on a month's youth loan, although the defender will feature primarily for the Development Squad. (Development squad again and for a month: like he'll help in our current situation). So what immediate use are either. And the excuses, same old, same old, he isn't creative enough to come up with one we haven't heard n times before. I'm annoyed, can you tell.

Like the line-up OurMaurice, not a fan of Spence? I think it's great Palmer has been an ever-present and I don't see why he can't be given the time to ply his trade. The same has to be said for Mccabe and Maguire. The thing that is frustrating is the spin on anyone can have a place. Coke and Prutton got in the side after loan spells out and yeah results got better but it would be nice to see some faith from DJ in some of his signings. We aren't keeping the ball so CM needs looking at. I can't see us going any further with Coke and Prutton. Mccabe they say has potential. Maguire in his 6 or 7 games has always looked lively. I like Nuhui but I worry will DJ just give up on his and bring in Michael Chopra?

A few weeks back DJ was saying Palmer was doing so well at right back that Buxton might struggle to regain his place, but then against L**ds he was pushed up to play wide right. He did okay there but I'd have thought centre midfield was his preferred position especially after playing there all last season for Tranmere. So anyway, Buxton gets crocked again and DJ brings in an 11th hour loan? Why's that then? So Palmer can continue to fill in while he persists in playing Antonio out of position? What about JJ? And what about Maguire? This smacks of last season, it's the Madine, CO'G, Rodri & Pecnik conundrum all over again. I think it's safe to assume DJ operates an 'in-crowd/outcast' policy when it comes to team selection. Bothroyd aside, he stuck with Dan Jones last season during that bad spell while other squad members were lucky to either get picked twice or come off the bench, and now it's Coke & Prutton's turn. I've nothing against Spence but I'd expect he'll be off in a week or so. Why couldn't we have used those funds to bring in a midfielder, especially as we seem to have 2 or 3 'standng by'. Doing 'nothing' is costing us valuable points IMO.

the thing is though we don't see how these players train all week, we don't know what their personalities are like, how much effort they put in etc. maybe the guys who's selections you don't understand perform better in training, act more professionally, do what they're told and end up being let down by the others who go off script
