McAuley Takes Owls Reigns

Wednesday have appointed academy manager Sean McAuley as Owls caretaker boss following the sacking of Paul Sturrock. McAuley will be assisted by goalkeeping coach Billy Mercer.

The move follows the news that Sturrock's assistants at Hillsborough, assistant manager Kevin Summerfield and defensive coach John Blackley left the club following Sturrock's departure.

McAuley has impressed in the Owls academy set-up with the team losing just one match - against Chelsea - so far this season and currently sitting second in their division behind leaders Sunderland.

The former Scunthorpe United and Rochdale player joined the Wednesday ranks in 2005 when he was appointed assistant manager for the club's 9-16 age range before stepping up to run the academy in 2006.

McAuley and Mercer are set to take control of all Owls first team matches until a new managerial appointment is made.
