Owls sign American defender Onyewu

Wednesday have bolstered their defence with the signing of former Queens Park Rangers, Malaga and AC Milan defender Oguchi Onyewu on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old left Loftus Road last week when his contract with the London club expired and the Owls swooped to bag the American international on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

Owls caretaker boss Stuart Gray has been looking for more options at the back after Roger Johnson's loan spell came to an end last week and with Kamil Zayatte and Anthony Gardner both sidelined through injury.

Onyewu arrives with a wealth of experience, having bagged Champions League football during a stint with Spanish side Malaga and having played across Europe, including Belgium, Italy and Portugal. He also had a spell with Newcastle United.

Wednesday host Macclesfield Town in an FA Cup Third Round replay clash on Tuesday night before visiting Burnley in the Championship on Saturday and the defender could be in-line for inclusion.
