Sunderland recall Wickham from Owls

Sunderland have recalled striker Connor Wickham from his successful loan spell with Wednesday.

The news is a blow for the Owls, who've enjoyed an upturn in fortunes following the loan arrival of the former Ipswich Town man, who scored eight goals in eleven matches while at Hillsborough.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet was pleased with Wickham's progress at Wednesday and the 20-year-old could either return to feature for the Premier League club or be sold in the January transfer window.

It means Stuart Gray will be without the striker for Tuesday's trip to Millwall and will have to reply on Atdhe Nuhiu, Chris Maguire and Caolan Lavery in the goals department.

Gray is understood to be keen on plugging the gap left by Wickham with a new loan recruit.

Has he been recalled because Sunderland are currently woeful up front? Or are they about to use the next three days to invite offers from ambitious Championship clubs for a young player who has clearly failed to make the grade in his time there? There are two or three contenders I suppose (sadly we aren't one of 'em) and if they do happen to offer a deal Sunderland are willing to accept then they're bound to pick up a real bargain by today's standards: A proven goalscorer at this level who will no doubt improve further and take that form and confidence into the PL if/when his new club's ambition pays off. We, meanwhile, will sit by and wait patiently, hoping no such agreement can be reached and then try to bring him back in on loan, on the cheap. What price ambition, huh?

Hope you're wrong, welshyowl, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Anyroad, while we're on the subject of Directors Of Football (cough!)... There's another story doing the rounds today: DJ has managed to win Vincent Tan over and secure the job of 'advisor' at Cardiff. This obviously entailed acquiring the taste for Chinese food and performing those party tricks MM enjoyed so much - balancing meatballs on the end of his nose and demolishing an entire trifle with both hands behind his back. Well done, I say!

Poyet is desperate for Bridcutt, Brighton will take Wickham as a make weight, a real pity if MM had bought him and signaled an intention - season ticket sales would go through the roof and all that lovely money would roll in and everyone would be happy. Still lets hope no one comes in for a proven goalscorer and he comes back on loan. Living in Brighton is hard enough without them having our star striker
