McAuley Approach Rejected

Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton has revealed he had an approach for former Owls caretaker boss Sean McAuley turned down as part of the Brian Laws negotiations.

Wharton revealed on the official Scunthorpe United website that he requested to speak to McAuley about the vacant managers post at Glanford Park in exchange for the services of Russ Wilcox - but it was duly turned down by the Owls.

He said: 'We did not agree any compensation when we first spoke but gave an indication of what we would require. The compensation was later agreed at £100,000 and I asked for permission to speak to Sean McAuley and if he were to join us we would not seek compensation for Russ Wilcox. This request was turned down and we eventually agreed additional compensation for Russ.'

McAuley was unbeaten during his short time in charge of Wednesday having picked up three victories and one draw from his four matches in charge. And some Owls fans were calling for him to be placed in charge of team affairs until christmas to see how he progressed.

But it now looks as though Wednesday will pay the compensation for Wilcox and will allow Sean McAuley to return to his duties of coaching the successful academy team.
