'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Manager's Musings: Post Cardiff

Wednesday boss Brian Laws was pleased with his side's performance in the 0-0 draw against league-leaders Cardiff City in his first game in charge at Hillsborough on Saturday.

The former Scunthorpe gaffer praised his side's 'no fear' attitude against Dave Jones' men - despite the abscence of wingers Wade Small and Chris Brunt through suspension.

He told the official SWFC site: 'It was a good point against the top of the table side. We showed no fear. We minimised their efforts at goal and kept a clean sheet against the top scorers in the division.'

And Laws heaped praise on the Owls defence - led by Lee Bullen and Mark Crossley making his first start in front of the near-24,000 Owls faithful.

He continued: 'We had to defend in numbers but overall I was delighted with our defending. We were prepared to throw bodies in the way.

'Mark Crossley has been absolutely outstanding and has given great confidence to the back four. He showed why we wanted him here. He's there to cover for other people and when he made a bad first touch, Lee showed a never-say-die attitude to cover for him.'

Meanwhile, the Wednesday boss confirmed Deon Burton should be fit for selection against West Brom on Tuesday night after going off in the first half with a knock to his cheek. The only doubt for the clash with the Baggies will be with Madjid Bougherra who was replaced by Graham Coughlan in the second half with a suspected thigh injury.
