Manager's Musings: Pre-WBA

Wednesday boss Brian Laws will be hoping to pick up his first win on home soil tonight as he welcomes former Middlesbrough team-mate Tony Mowbray and his West Brom side to Hillsborough.

But Laws told the official Wednesday site that there will be no old pals act - despite the Baggies recent poor form which has seen the pre-season promotion favourites win just one match in their last five outings.

He said: 'They might not have got the results but they are certainly creating a lot of chances. They hit the post and bar six times in one game and still lost so they're not far away.'

'People were saying 'you couldn't ask for harder games' when we took over but I prefer these games. They give us a realism in terms of what we want to achieve this year. It will tell us if we're playing around, and kidding people because we've had a flurry of results, or if we can measure ourselves against the top teams.'

And Laws continued to reveal he's excited at the prospect of pitting his wits against his former Middlesbrough captain.

'It's interesting coming up against a manager who I played with at Middlesbrough. We were at a reunion dinner last week for the Class of 86, which had successes year after year. He was the skipper then and showed great leadership on the pitch and off it. He was always destined to do well.'
