Laws Keen On Whelan

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed midfielder Glenn Whelan is not available for transfer despite former boss Paul Sturrock placing him on the transfer-list at the start of the season.

Laws has been impressed with the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international and has insisted he is very much part of the current Wednesday squad.

He told the official SWFC website: 'As far as I'm concerned that's in the past. He's very much part of my squad and I've told him that.

'I haven't really spoken to him about coming off the list. You can be on the list but it doesn't mean he's going anywhere. At this moment in time he's not available so it's just a piece of paper as far as I'm concerned.'

And the Owls gaffer was impressed with Whelan's performance in Tuesday night's victory over West Brom and has no doubts over his ability to fill in for the suspended Kenny Lunt at Leicester on Saturday.

He continued: 'He's a very good player, very aware of who's around him and a good passer of the ball. I like to see midfield players getting into the box and he did that on numerous occasions on Tuesday.'

Whelan made an impressive start to the season after being placed on the transfer list by Paul Sturrock - and still carried on in the centre of the Owls' midfield despite seemingly out-of-favour with Sturrock.
