'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Bruce: 'We Were Fortunate'

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce heaped praise on Wednesday in his post match press conference - despite dropping to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of his table-toppers at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Brian Laws called the defeat the 'biggest travesty' of his life after the Owls wasted numerous chances in front of goal - and Birmingham took all three of their chances to make the scoreline a flattering one to say the least for the Blues.

But Bruce insisted the rejuvinated Wednesday side were as tough a game as they have encountered this season and that his side were fortunate to grab all three points on a day when they could have easily left with none.

He said: 'We got away with it, it's as simple as that. We had the rub of the green and that was as tough a game as we've had this season. Sheffield Wednesday were excellent and the crowd was right behind them throughout the game.

'They played the game quickly, passed well and had the crowd behind them. I don't think we've had as tough a game as that for a long time but we've got away with it.'

And the former Manchester United captain revealed the finishing was the difference between the two teams on the day.

He continued: 'They missed the vital thing, finding the net. At the moment at the top end of the pitch we always look like we are going to score goals.

'I wouldn't swap McSheffrey, Jerome or Bendtner for anyone. McSheffrey is lethal at the moment.'
