Lucas Linked With Darlo

Former Wednesday stopper David Lucas looks set to put pen to paper on a contract for League Two side Darlington after being released by the Owls at the start of the season.

Darlington boss Dave Penney has made no secret of his desire to add a new goalkeeper to his ranks with regular stopper Sam Russell sidelined through injury - and the former Owls and Preston goalkeeper is his number one target following the opening of the January transfer window.

'People might look at and think Sam's not playing and we've lost games. I wouldn't blame David Stockdale for that but at the moment we only have one goalkeeper at the club.' Penny told the official Darlington site.

Lucas failed to secure a new contract at the end of last season after he picked up a knee injury in the clash with Millwall back in February and rejected reduced terms with the club while he returned to full fitness.

The injury ruled him out until December but the stopper has been training alongside his former colleagues at Middlewood Road as he looked to find a new club on return to fitness - with Darlington seemingly happy to take him on.

Lucas made over 50 starts for the Owls since signing permanently from Preston for a fee of £100,000 - and was part of the side that achieved promotion via the play-offs from League One under Paul Sturrock.
