Whelan Rewarded

Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan has been rewarded for his top performances throughout a successful month for the Owls by receiving the EAD Solicitors' Player-of-the-Month award for December.

The young Irish midfielder was placed on the transfer-list at the start of the season by former boss Paul Sturrock - but Whelan has hit back by going on a fine run of form which has helped the Owls to within three points of the Championship play-off places.

And it's the second time this season he's picked up the award - after excelling in the Wednesday midfield in August despite a relatively off-beat end to the previous campaign.

Whelan pipped goalkeeper Mark Crossley and defender Madjid Bougherra to the award after netting two superb goals in the 4-1 rout over Leicester City at the Walkers Stadium and at home in the Christmas cracker 3-3 draw with Southampton.

His performances have kept the highly-rated Yoann Folly on the bench after Whelan linked up well with midfield partner Kenny Lunt in the centre of the park - leading Wednesday to four wins, one draw and a defeat in a brilliant month for Wednesday.
