Quartet of Owls Fly Away For International Fixtures

Quartet of Owls Fly Away For International Fixtures

After the crucial Reading fixture on Friday, we hit a two week international break where there is no game until the Owls are back in action against local rivals, Barnsley FC, on Saturday the 1st of April. In case you`re wondering, England face Germany at the Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund on Wednesday 22 March, at 19:45. The Three Lions are back in action 6 days later, as they face Lithuania at Wembley, in their latest qualifying group stage match, as they look to be one of the 32 sides battling it out for the FIFA World Cup, next year in Russia.

But, as for the here and now, it is that time of the year again where we get bored as there never seems to be any football on, which, if you`re like me, is devastating news. However, it may be good news for some Wednesday players, as it will provide a chance for players such Almen Abdi, and Sam Hutchinson to regain fitness after returning from spells on the side-lines.

Other players will be given the opportunity to represent their countries in these fixtures. Four Wednesday players in total have been called up for their nations. Keiren Westwood has been called up by Martin O`Neill, and has made the Republic of Ireland`s provisional 39-man-squad for their home fixtures against Wales and Iceland. The clash against Wales in Dublin will be a 6-pointer in Group D as the Irish look to extend their advantage at the top. They then go on to host Iceland in an international friendly match.

Meanwhile, this side of the channel and north of the border, Gordon Strachan has called a trio of Sheffield Wednesday players up to his Scotland side. Jordan Rhodes, Steven Fletcher and Barry Bannan will take on Canada and Slovenia in their fixtures. They play Canada first in a friendly at Easter Rd., and then go on to take on Slovenia in Group F. The Scots will be looking to resurrect their qualifying hopes after picking up four points from the first four fixtures, and a win (with other results going their way in the group) could see them jump to 3rd.

I can understand three of the international selections but I must be missing something about the inclusion of the Scottish Neandertal who wears the number 6 for us. Assume there must be something in his contract which states he must play if he's fit. We have much better options than him.
