Laws' Musings: Post-Saints

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has his say on the Owls' 2-1 defeat against Southampton on Tuesday night which left the Owls without a win in 2007.

Former Wednesday loanee Kenwyne Jones netted a brace as he helped the Saints to make amends for Mark Crossley's last minute leveller at Hillsborough in December, despite Steve Maclean levelling on 52 minutes.

And Laws insisted it was the Owls' first-half performance which cost them on a chilly evening on the south coast.

He told the official SWFC site: 'I'm very disappointed with our first half performance. We were second to everything and it was poor compared to the last few weeks. But all of a sudden we started playing and creating chances. The second half response was what I wanted.

'All our mistakes are causing us problems at the moment. We have a habit of shooting ourselves in the foot. Sometimes we're taking an extra touch when we've got to defend ugly - I've never seen a goal scored from row Z of the stand.'

The defeat leaves Wednesday without a win in January, and Laws is hopeful his side can kick February off with victory as they welcome high-flyers Preston NE to Hillsborough this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

He added: 'It has been a poor month, no doubt about it. But the belief is still there and we've got to maintain that.'
