Wildsmith Gets New Deal
Following appearing for the Owls on Tuesday, (and coming off after a nasty looking collision with Chris O'Grady), Joe Wildsmith has signed a new deal with the Owls.
Whilst we mention it, Wildsmith has commented on the collision, since telling swfc.co.uk:
"I`m feeling ok today, the doctor didn`t want to take any risks so it was just a precaution.
"But I thought it was a great performance from the boys and a good response."
Back to the contract, and in a rare move, swfc.co.uk confirmed that is a five-year deal for Wildsmith. Normally, the length of the contract is undisclosed.
The man between the sticks in a product of the Owls youth academy through the recent years, and had a break-out season under Carlos Carvalhal under the Portuguese manager's first full season at Hillsborough.
As a back-up to Keiren Westwood, Wildsmith made 14 appearances in 2015/16, including both EFL cup victories over Newcastle and Arsenal.
He told swfc.co.uk: "I`m delighted to sign for the club long term, it`s great that the club believe in me and see me as part of the future.
"I`ve worked as hard as I can and that has been noticed, I`ve really enjoyed playing games over the last two years and all that has been rewarded with a new contract.
"Playing games is valuable and just being in and around a first team environment and training every day with and getting advice from Keiren Westwood and Andy Rhodes.
"I feel I`m getting better in each area and want to keep that going.".
Personally, I feel like this is a good move for all parties. Wildsmith gets the benefit of learning from fan fave Westwood, and at the same time, Wednesday are investing in a goalkeeper for the future, who has an unrestricted potential, having represented England at U20 level. Shrewd business.
