'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Whelan Collects Third Gong

Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan has been rewarded for his fine form in a difficult month for the Owls by picking up the Player of the Month award for January.

It's the third time the Republic of Ireland midfield has been rewarded by Owls fans after also picking up the award for his impressive performances for the months of August and December.

Whelan told the official SWFC site: 'I'm delighted, this is great for myself individually. I think I've done OK at times, obviously you're not always going to play well but I'll keep trying to work hard. When I'm not happy with myself, I just have to go out and improve in the next game.'

Whelan beat off stiff competition from captain Lee Bullen and in-form striker Steve Maclean for the award in one of the closest votes ever, but managed to pip the duo by just two votes.

And he is confident the Owls can improve of their recent poor run of form to climb up the table in the coming weeks.

He added: 'The team hasn't been doing too well but, as long as we stick together, the results will come for us and we'll push up the table. You have you're ups and downs, we're on a down at the moment but have to work hard to get out of this.'
