Watson Puts The Boot In

Wednesday new-boy Steve Watson almost missed out on making his debut at Turf Moor on Saturday - after forgetting his boots!

The former Newcastle and Everton man made a last-minute loan move to Hillsborough on Thursday night, but forgot to bring his boots from West Brom as he rushed up the M1 to train with his new team-mates on Friday.

But the defender made an impressive debut in the blue and white of the Owls as he helped them to their first point of the year against fellow strugglers Burnley at Turf Moor.

He told the Mirror: 'Brian Laws twice made contact with my manager and it was good to feel wanted again.

'But it happened so quickly that I didn't have time to go back to West Brom to get my boots. I trained in a spare pair on Friday and had to jump in a car and meet a friend of mine to bring my boots up for the game.'

And Wednesday boss Brian Laws was impressed with his display - despite the last-minute rush for his boots!

He said: 'Steve made a huge difference at the back showing calmness and a composure we have missed in the past. He is a quality player who makes the simple things look easy because of his experience. His assurance and talking at the back was invaluable.'
