'If It's Football, It's Vital'

JJ Set For Battle

Wednesday new-boy Jermaine Johnson has revealed he's expecting a tough battle to dislodge Wade Small from the side and cement a spot on the right-wing.

The Jamaican international has yet to feature in the famous blue and white stripes after making his £400,000 move from Bradford in the January transfer window - after being sent-off in his final match for the Bantams.

But Johnson is all set his for his Owls' debut as Brian Laws takes his side to Kenilworth Road next Tuesday to try and pick up their first victory of the year against Mike Newell's struggling Hatters side.

'The Luton game is coming up now; I just need to get into the team, I'm looking forward to the game,' Johnson told the Sheffield Star.

''Smally has been playing good football, I need to play good football as well, and the gaffer will have to make his mind up. I have to make an impression on him - but Smally has been playing really well.'

Although the pacey winger has been suspended from taking part in first team affairs, Johnson has had time to settle in to the squad and also featured in the 3-1 victory over Huddersfield reserves on Tuesday.

He added: 'I can do much better - but that was my first game. Also the other team worked hard to close me down; I have to work on coping with that.

'It was just good to play. I like the way the club have got me involved since I came here. It's been good for me to train and get fitter; the training has been very competitive.'
