Deon Loves Competition

In-form Wednesday striker Deon Burton has revealed the competition for places in the Owls' attack has helped him raise his game in recent weeks - and bag more goals.

The former Derby and Portsmouth hitman struggled to find his goalscoring touch in the first half of the season - and often had to sit on the sidelines as a replacement for Marcus Tudgay or Steve Maclean.

But Burton now seems to have secured a first team spot thanks to his recent fine form, for the time being at least - and he pointed towards the competition for places in attack as a key reason for his improvement on the pitch.

'I think that what's spurred me on is the quality of the strikers we have at the club,' he told the Sheffield Star.

'You have to be on your game to be in the 11; if you're not doing it, you're going to be on the bench or not involved. That kind of competition is good for the team.'

Burton, who signed for the Owls in January 2006 from League One side Rotherham, has netted six goals for the club so far this season - with five of his six coming in his last 13 outings for the club.

And he will be looking to make it three goals in as many games as Wednesday travel to face struggling Luton at Kenilworth Road next Tuesday.

He added: 'I'm looking forward to the Luton game on Tuesday. It was a decent performance by us last Saturday; if we can play anywhere near that at Luton, I think we can get something, definitely.'
