Owls Fans: We Want Macca!

The latest poll on Vital Sheffield Wednesday asked whether boss Brian Laws should offer top goalscorer Steve Maclean a new contract with the club - and the results are in!

The Scottish hitman has been in fine form this season for Wednesday, netting ten goals this term and leading the Owls goalscoring charts - but his contract at the club is up in the summer.

Boss Brian Laws has yet to offer Maclean a new deal with the club, prompting fans to question whether the former Scunthorpe and Rangers goalscorer will be in the famous blue and white stripes this season.

But the latest poll on Vital Sheffield Wednesday has revealed that a whopping 89 per cent of Owls fans want to see Maclean offered a new deal, with just seven per cent saying Maclean shouldn't be offered a new deal, while the remaining four per cent believe Laws should wait until the end of the season before offering the striker a new deal.

Maclean worked with Laws during his successful loan spell at Scunthorpe a year before he moved to S6 on a free transfer from Rangers - and spoke of his delight when he linked up with his former boss as Laws took the reigns at Hillsborough following the sacking of Paul Sturrock last year.

The Scot enjoyed a fine run of form through December which saw him as the number one striker at the club to many Owls fans, and he clocked up a regular place in the Wednesday starting line-up for the first time since his injury ruled him out of the end to the Owls' League One promotion push in 2005.

But relations between Macca and Laws seem to have faded in recent weeks.

Rumours emerging from the club recently pointed towards a falling out between Maclean and Laws following the Owls 2-1 defeat against Southampton at the end of January, in which Maclean was dropped from the starting line-up for the following game despite netting in the game at St Mary's.

And the situation raised even more questions in the weekend victory over Southend at Hillsborough in which Maclean turned his celebrations to Laws after netting a last-minute winner - raising his fist in the direction of the Owls gaffer.

Laws opted to bring on new-boy Leon Clarke to replace Brunt before Maclean, which caused a lot of fans in the South Stand call for the inclusion of Maclean to the Wednesday bench.

And when warming up on the touchline, the Owls hitman just shrugged his shoulders when some fans shouted why he wasn't being brought on to the field.

One fan even rang in to the post-match radio phone-in on Radio Sheffield to suggest that Maclean was on his way to West Brom on a loan deal until the end of the season, a rumour which Laws then laughed off - but never denied the Owls striker was on his way out of the club.

So it's anyones guess as to whether Maclean will still be at the club next season, and as the days pass by the rumours will continue to grow.

But one thing's for sure - the majority of the Owls faithful want to see the Scot pick up a new contract and end all the speculation over his future.

We certainly do, sort it out Laws.

I'm hoping that he's not been offered a new contract yet so he plays for one, but it's not looking good. someone needs to get their finger out!

A few points. Laws fetched him to Scunthorpe when he was unknown, and he scored plenty for him at Scunny that year. Laws knows him inside out, and if he is not picking him, then there is a reason. Anybody with footy knowledge knows that your best 2 strikers do not allways make the best pairing. (look at Owen and Fowler at liverpool). Maclean is a talented Goal scorer, but like it or not Tudgay & Burton are the best pairing, and Macca has to take his chance when it comes, and form a partnership. Maclean will allways suffer in the Modern Game from his lack of pace, if he is honnest with himself he might try and change his game to suit it. At Burnley the other week, he dropped deep, and was the nearest thing I have seen to John Sheridan, he kept the ball, spraying it about,a nd never lost it once, he could be the answer to playing behind the strikers, and linking up with Midfield, but will he be willing to drop to midfield ?
