Whelan Bags Owls Gong

Wednesday's midfield meastro Glenn Whelan has fought off stiff competition to pick up the Owls' Player of the Season award for the 2006/2007 campaign.

The Irish midfielder picked up his award at the club's EAD end of season dinner which was held at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.

He fought off competition from players such as Chris Brunt, Frank Simek, Deon Burton, Marcus Tudgay and Steve Maclean who have all enjoyed superb seasons for the Owls to help the club to within two points of the play-off spots with just two games to go this term.

Whelan has picked up four Player of the Month gongs through the season in August, December, January and for this month.

And all this comes after former manager Paul Sturrock deemed Whelan surplus to requirements and put him on the transfer list at the start of the current campaign.

But the midfielder bounced back from the off with some superb performances and some important goals throughout the season to take his tally to eight for the season so far.
