The polls are closed, the votes have been counted and, at last, it's time to announce the results of 'Vital SWFC Goal of the Season'.
Vital SWFC forum members got out their videotapes, scoured YouTube and drove themselves crazy replaying the finest goals from this season over and over.. and there have been so many absolute crackers to choose from. In the end it boiled down to a choice between two of the best strikes you're ever likely to see. So, without further ado, in traditional reverse order, with added match commentary in italics (though the picture above SHOULD have given the game away by now?!)...
In 3rd place, with 7% of the vote:
Jermaine Johnson vs. Leeds, 3/3/07 - A mere 7% percent of the vote? Just goes to show the quality of the top two! But seriously folks, in a regular season for goals, this classy strike from JJ, running in off the wing to blast the ball into the roof of the Leeds net, would have taken the honours no problem.
Forum member willowowl: 'An amazing touch from Whelan to Super J and then KA-BOOM! 3-0 against Leeds with ten men, that's my goal of the season.'
'Brunt clears.. towards Burton.. beat Rui Marques to that far too easily.. Burton to Whelan, and now JOHNSON! Ohhh, it's another WONDERFUL goal from Sheffield Wednesday! Jermaine Johnson with the BLISTERING finish this time!'
In 2nd place, with 36% of the vote:
Glenn Whelan vs. Leicester, 2/12/07 - A match where three absolute screamers hit the Leicester net in a very short space of time leaving the Foxes reeling, this piledriver from our midfield dynamo was the pick of the bunch, and a worthy runner up. One of the Owls best away performances of the last few years, capped by this little beauty.
Forum member magic_pie: 'Just a quick snapshot out of nothing in off the bar and brilliant timing too!'
'.. and now McAuley.. almost showed too much of it to Tudgay.. and now WHELAN FROM DISTANCE! Off the bar and IN! What a stunning goal! One even better than Chris Brunt's, he was absolutely MILES out!'
In 1st place, with 45% of the vote, the winner is:
Chris Brunt vs. Leeds, 3/3/07 - Defender robbed. Brunty 35 yards out. Scores. Simple as. Genius.
Forum member Skeggy Owl: 'Brunt's goal against Leeds for me. Nothing short of perfection in my opinion.'
' .. back to Richardson.. oh, he's been caught in possession by Brunt! Oh, and the keeper's off his LINE.. and Chris Brunt has beaten him, with the most exquisite chip! Brilliant, BRILLIANT goal by Chris Brunt! All his own work: he won it, and what followed was world class! The vision, the execution: ANY player would have been proud of that!'
Our Vital SWFC Player of the Season scores the Vital SWFC Goal of the Season. Magic.
