The Greatest Ever Owls Right Back

Last week's forum poll is done and dusted and the Vital SWFC members have voted for Roland Nilsson as the Greatest Ever Owls Right Back.

Roland was signed for the Owls by Ron Atkinson from IFK Gothenburg in December 1989, and over the next four and a half years was a model of consistency with 186 appearances in the right back position, contributing greatly to Wednesday's successes during that period. He remained with the club until the end of the 1994 season, returning to his hometown club Helsingborg, and was given an emotional send-off by the Owls fans at Hillsborough. Roland earned a massive 116 caps for the Swedish international side and went to two World Cups: he was part of the team that finished third in 1994.

Speed, timing in the tackle, excellent distribution and positional sense make him our choice for the Greatest Ever Owls Team.

Honourable mentions this week go to Mel Sterland and Viv Anderson, the only players who pushed Roland in our poll, but in truth it was a landslide victory for the Swede!

This week's forum poll is for the Greatest Ever Owls Centre Backs (the top two will go into the team), and we're also asking for nominations for the Greatest Ever Owls Left Back. We'll announce the results for Centre Back next Saturday!
