What, No Student Prices?
Vital Sheffield Wednesday forum member, and disgruntled student, NicNac has her say on the Owls' decision to scrap student season tickets this season.
Adult, Under 11, Under 18, OAP, Under 21… what, no student prices?
This was the bizarre list I was confronted with when trying to figure out how much I would have to pay for a season ticket to watch my beloved Wednesday next season.
After being exiled down South for a year, I was looking forward to moving back to Sheffield and being in a position to watch the lads on a more regular basis. Imagine my shock when I discovered that apparently I don't fit into a category which is deserving of a discount, despite being a student.
Why should someone who is six months younger than me (but who may be in a full time job) be able to buy a season ticket at £288, when I (a 21 year old student whose only source of income is a student loan) have to pay £419? A difference of £131! Baffling to say the least.
Even our friends across the city offer student discounts to anyone producing a valid NUS card, something every student gets anyway.
Why can't the board see what kind of revenue they are missing out on? Sheffield has one of the largest student populations in the UK, with around 55000 new students every year. We also have one of the highest student retention rates in the country, with around a quarter of students staying in the city after graduation. Surely this is something Wednesday should be capitalising on, as students could easily turn into full price 'adult' season ticket holders.
Then again, we wouldn't be Wednesday if we did things the easy way...
