'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Frankie Bags Gold

Wednesday right-back Frank Simek picked up his first winners medal in his professional career with victory in the Gold Cup final with the US national side at the weekend.

The former Arsenal trainee made a substitute appearance in front of 60,000 at Soldiers Field in Chicago with the game at 1-1 against Mexico, and was on the pitch when Benny Feilhaber netted the winner for the USA after coming from a goal down.

Simek also picked up a booking in a frantic finale, but held on to help the hosts take the trophy and give the right-back some 'pre-season' joy.

US coach Bob Bradley said: 'We're very excited about the fact we can get stronger as a group and win this. It means a lot to all of us.'

Simek, who was a key part in the Owls' impressive campaign last term, battled it out with Jonathan Spector for a starting role at right-back, with coach Bradley seemingly unsure of his first-choice number two.

The US National side will now go on to participate in the Copa America which runs between June 26 and July 15 - with Simek expected to miss at least the first week of pre-season training back at Middlewood Road.
