Owls Step Closer to Sharp

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed he is set to enter in to talks with Scunthorpe United striker Billy Sharp within the next 48 hours.

The news is the first piece of concrete evidence that will interest Owls fans with regards to the League One top scorer from last term - after weeks and weeks of speculation linking the former Sheffield United youth product to a move to the blue and white half of Sheffield.

Wednesday were said to have had a bid of around £1.5m turned down by the Iron for the services of their key man - and told to up their price - but Laws insists the original offer is what has led to Scunthorpe allowing Sharp to speak with the Owls.

'The chairman at Scunthorpe wouldn't be allowing us to talk to Billy if he wasn't happy with what we offered several weeks ago,' Laws told BBC Radio Sheffield.

'We are aware of the interest from Norwich and Wolves and Sheffield United. But he knows what I'm all about and there's going to come a time when he has to make a decision. It's a matter of trying to do the best deal that we possibly can.

We won't be holding our breath here at Vital Sheffield Wednesday, we've been here far too many times before - but it's a step in the right direction as far as the Sharp deal is concerned, and might just justify letting Steve Maclean leave for Cardiff at the weekend.

Just don't keep us waiting much longer either way, we can't take it anymore!
