Athers To Face Owls

Former Wednesday captain Peter Atherton is set to come up against his former club this summer after taking the reins as assistant manager at Halifax Town.

Wednesday face the West Yorkshire club in their first pre-season friendly on Saturday July 14 and Atherton - who made over 200 appearances in the famous blue and white stripes - will be on the bench shouting orders for Town at The Shay in two weeks.

And it could have been a former Owls' duo in the Halifax ranks for the clash before former defender Steve Haslam secured a move to Bury.

Wigan-born Atherton spent six years at Hillsborough making 216 league starts for the club in the Premiership before moving on to Bradford City and Birmingham and finishing his playing career at Halifax in the 2005-06 campaign.

Atherton has recently been acting as a youth coach at his hometown club Wigan Athletic but will start his assistant manager role in perfect fashion against the Owls.
