Coughlan Contract Terminated

Coughlan Contract Terminated

Wednesday defender Graham Coughlan has left the Owls after having his contract with the club terminated by mutual consent today, and being given a free transfer.

The Irish former Plymouth Arglye defender fell out of favour with Owls boss Brian Laws since the former Scunthorpe man took the reigns from Paul Sturrock back in October, and was already told he was surplus to requirements with the club.

But despite Cocko's plea to stay at S6 and fight for his place this pre-season, the centre-back will now be looking for pastures new - with Swindon Town a possible destination to link up with former boss Sturrock.

The defender followed Paul Sturrock to Hillsborough from Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 2005 and was a vital part of helping the Owls stay in the Championship following promotion the following season.

And not only was the Irish centre-back crucial at the back for the club, he helped notch five goals at the other end which saw him collect the gong for the fans player of the year at S6.

His future at Hillsborough always looked in doubt following Sturrock's departure, and he was loaned out to Championship rivals Burnley towards the end of last season where he made just two appearances for the Clarets.

Cocko made 52 appearances in total in the famous blue and white stripes, netting six goals along the way and putting 100 per cent in every match.

Vital Sheffield Wednesday wants to thank him for his efforts while in South Yorkshire, and wishes him all the best in the future.

seems a strange decision. new managers often seem to release players for the sake of it, just to show who's boss.

Shame to loose him, He was a rock. I suppose we have to trust the manager, but I hope we get a decent replacement ? Not seen too many signs of ambition in the transfer market yet, hopefully we might spend some of the supposed £2.5 million from Bougherra on some players we have heard off ?
