Owls Table Striker Bid

Wednesday boss Brian Laws has revealed that he has tabled a bid for an undisclosed striker and is awaiting a response as he looks to bolster his squad ahead of the new season.

Wednesday have already missed out on former Scunthorpe striker Billy Sharp, who decided on a move to boyhood heroes Sheffield United this week, and it looks like they'll also be missing out on former loanee Kenwyne Jones who has been slapped with a 'hands off' tag by Southampton boss George Burley.

But the Wednesday gaffer has been busy looking elsewhere as he looks to add that elusive striker to his books earlier rather than later.

A number of rumours have been doing the rounds on internet message boards including Vital Sheffield Wednesday, with John Hartson, Paul Dickov and Anthony Le Tallac some of the names linked with a summer move to S6.

But Laws has also revealed earlier in the week that he has been looking overseas to find his star hitman.

'We've been looking globally and been looking at one or two, as I say we've missed out, and that's not just on Billy, we've missed out on other players as well,' Laws told BBC Radio Sheffield.

'When you're looking for a player, in particular strikers, everybody's looking at them. Those that are spending money are looking at the same ones we are.

'So we're always under pressure and constant threat from other teams. We're not gonna burn our bridges and put everything in one basket, we've got to be very careful. When was the last time the club spent that kind of money?'

So at the moment it looks as though it;s anyones guess as to who the Owls new striker will be, but it finally looks as though it could be happening sooner rather than later.

Should have signed Sheringham and Fowler but Wednesday can't attract big names anymore, even if they're in their 40's.

Fowler whould be nice, but what sirt og wage is he on 30-40k. Our whole teams not on that !

When are we going to get a WOW signing ? All we are doing is signing no name players. To get Fowler or Eastwood or Hartson would be a statement to the fans saying we mean business, but all we are doing is picking up the dregs from other rival teams

If we are looking to get into the prem, then we need to be looking a players that send a message out to our fans and other teams alike that we are a team that are looking to build so to get to the prem.

instead of signing two cast off keepers and a player who cudnt get in Scunthorpes team at end of season, what kind of message is that, our squad is worse now than what it was when we ended last season

We haven't gone for Eastwood because we can't afford him.. "same price as Sharp", exactly, we couldn't afford him either.

Of course we could afford him. there is 2.5 million from Bougherra, and all the season ticket money. And why have we signed 2 no name keepers when Nicky "Sheffield Wednesday" Wever was available for free ?

To be fair haxey, all the signings so far have been frees, so whether Weaver is available on a free or not shouldn't really matter. Gie the lads a chance, they haven't even donned the famous shirt yet and everyone's on their backs!

I am not on their backs NicNac. I will be their every game supporting them, but is it not about time we stuck our neck out and said to the rest of the division, "look at us, we can attract big players and we are going to challenge" Rather than say look at what was left for free, so we signed them ? Can you remember when we used to be linked with all the star players, and remember how it felt when we signed Waddle and walker ? I know we are not in the Premiership now, but why are a small team like Cardiff looking at Robbie Fowler ? Can you imagine how many tickets and shirts we would sell if Robbie came here ? I think we are stuck in a rut going nowhere, and just be out luck that Brunt and Simek will leave in next few weeks, and we will be left in the mire with no quality players.

I agree with you NicNac, I reckon the signings so far have been sensible. Give Lawsy and the boys some time they'll be fine. We'll get the right faces in...

Has the last 8 seasons wiped the last bit of ambition from you all on here ? So nobody thinks that if we got Robbie Fowler instead of Cardiff it would breath new life into us all, and put 5,000 more on the gate ? "Sensible signings" does not translate in the same way as "Fantastic exciting signings" does it. REMEMBER EVERYONE, NOT LONG AGO WE WERE A TOP 6 PREMIERSHIP TEAM WITH 4 VISITS TO WEMBLEY IN ONE SEASON. DO YOU NOT ALL WANT THAT AGAIN, DO WE NOT ALL NEED A SPARK OF AMBITION FROM THE CLUB ?

Haxey, you know that the Bougherra money is staying in the bank for as long as possible. You should come on the forum more often, incidentally.

I just wish i could pick up the paper and see us being linked with a player that makes a statement that says we mean business. Hull City have had talks with Junihio about a Free Transfer, can you imagine what that would do here ? An Extra 5000 on the gate at over 20 a ticket, so that would earn us over 100,000 every single game, so even paying him a big wage would actually be an investment. Why do we no do this ?

will it ever happen
