'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Greatest Ever Owls Right Wing

Last week's forum poll is done and dusted and the Vital SWFC members (with a touch of controversy about the end result) have voted for Chris Waddle as the Greatest Ever Owls Right Wing.

Signed by then manager Trevor Francis, Chris came to Hillsborough in July 1992 in a million pound move from Marseille, and became a legend in the hearts and minds of Owls fans during a four year stay.

His influence was immense as the club reached both domestic cup finals in the 1992-93 season and Chris was voted the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in 1993. However, his later career at Hillsborough was marred by injury and he was released at the end of the 1995-96 season, having made 147 appearance and scored 15 goals.

But the memories he gave us! His piledriving free kick in the 1993 FA Cup semi final vs. United, scoring one and making three in a 5-0 demolition of West Ham in the following season, where Waddle almost singlehandedly ran the game from start to finish, a subsequent 6-2 walloping of Leeds..

We still worship him, and that's why he's our choice for the Greatest Ever Owls Team.

But should he be on the left? Some of us thought so.

An honourable mention this week goes to Alan Finney, the Owls all-time record appearance maker and the player who pushed Chris very hard in our poll.

This week's forum poll is for the Greatest Ever Centre Midfield (we'll be selecting two players), and we're also asking for nominations for the Greatest Ever Owls Left Wing (or left-sided midfielder). It will be interesting in view of Waddle's election to the Right Wing!

We'll announce the results for Centre Midfield next Saturday!
