A-spire-ing Owls Win At Saltergate

The in form Wade Small continued his excellent pre-season, driving in the Owls second goal to complete a friendly victory over Chesterfield.

It's three strikes in four games now for the former MK Dons star, who seems to be putting the trials and tribulations of an injury hit season behind him, pressing a strong claim for a starting spot when the Championship battle resumes.

The Owls began the game with a youthful back four, Liam McMenamin starting with Hinds, Wood and Spurr and completing the game - a good outing for the youngster at right back. Richard Wood was given the armband - a taste of things to come, perhaps.

After the lively opening exchanges, it was Chris Brunt who put Wednesday on track for the win, scoring from a penalty after Leon Clarke had been brought down following a pass from Johnson. The Owls saw out the rest of the half with little difficulty.

Brian Laws kept all his substitutions for the second half, Deon Burton replacing the lacklustre Clarke on 62 minutes and working hard to get a couple of excellent chances on goal.

But it turned out to be Small's night.. on for Whelan, and blasting a 25 yarder past the Spireites keeper in the 85th minute.

A useful workout, and maybe one or two pointers to the eventual starting line up gained by Laws.

good performance by the lads last night! still dnt think clarke is up2 it! i beleieve laws put him in last night as a tester, cos everything seemed 2 b aiming at clarke, and tbh he failed misserabley! so please laws sign a replacement! small johnson and tudgay looked very sharp! wood and hindes steady away at the back! tommy spurr same old same old!!!!!!!!
i think if we play like that in the championship we will get hammered some of our passes was lazy and well of target i hope it was because the game was too easy for them in all they had a goal disalowed and a penalty turned down brunties penalty was pretty much central however wade small and jj look well up for it i wouldnt mind seeing small up front a bit more it looked a good partnership with burton torwards then end up the owls
so he played upfront i wo gunna say if he wo on wing jj is a striker

Ah text speak. Valid points 2k7, after I managed to decipher them :P Good pre-season so far, 3 more to go before the new season starts. Can't wait!
Went to game last nite, Small came on for last 20 looked OK and what a goal it was ! JJ looked electric as did Tudgay ! Woody and Spurr did well but didnt get impressed by Hinds and Clarke. Clarke has not changed he still cant get off the floor!
nicnac wot u on bwt vailid points
up the owls 2k7
u sure u was at the same match UPDAOWLS ? cos spurr was *****, like i said same old same ld with him i hope he starts with gilbert next year, he is a country mile better than spurr!
Yes LUBY 02 i was at same game as u cos I saw u ! Were u the person walking round with the guide dog ! Lol ! thats your opinion but I fought he did fine he made no mistakes and did wat e ad to ! It wasnt as if e ad a shocker like u are makin out e did spurr always gives 110 per cent ! If u now wat your on bout tell me wat e did wrong ven !
I think what Nicnac is saying, up the owls 2k7, is she can't work out what you're saying, because text speak (txt spk?) is unreadable if you don't use it yourself :)

dwelling 2 much on the ball in dangerous placeswhen there was plenty of time 2 getrid earlier, but always needs tat extra touch! not hitting the player at r8 time, he did same last night that he did against birmingham last year, not hitting man on halfway line and just letting him stoll past, nearly reslted in a goal last night! u cnt judge a player on giving 110 per cent if so then craig rocastle wud b a world beater!
2k7 as I do not use text speak it is all gibberish to me, so any point that you make are lost on a lot of people like me who only read English! So please make you point in English so we all can enjoy your views thanks
LUBY02 u av to remeber Spurr is not even nieghnteen it was is first full season so e is going to make mistakes u av to realise that and not get on his back ! He is good in the air and puts a good foot in he is better than someone without passion like Clarke ! And Left Back isnt his main position centre back is but I do agree that he makes odd mistake but he is still learning
ok chillout u know relax

It was a valid point about Spurr actually playing out of position. I know he's young, but I well remember Micheal Owen scoring against Argentina at slightly younger. At 19, you have still a lot to learn granted, but if youve got the basics then its a lot easier to progress faster. I will give him a chance, as I dont rate Gilbert at all. Suppose Watson will always fill in if it all goes pear early on in the season.
i know he is only 19, but if he cnt cope with the pressure then we shouldn't b playing him! ye alright he is good in the air and ye he is playing out of position, then put him on bench as a centre half **** bullen off and play a natural left back at left back! ye he makes the odd mistake, but tbh he made 2 any 4 me last season and cost us quite a few goals so thats y i dunt rate him! gilbert did more in the 5 games he played in than spurr di all season 4 me! and i dnt get on his bak at the game i save it 4 back in pub or on ere, cos what use is it guno do at game so that dunt make the slightest bit of difference that comment!
