A-spire-ing Owls Win At Saltergate
The in form Wade Small continued his excellent pre-season, driving in the Owls second goal to complete a friendly victory over Chesterfield.
It's three strikes in four games now for the former MK Dons star, who seems to be putting the trials and tribulations of an injury hit season behind him, pressing a strong claim for a starting spot when the Championship battle resumes.
The Owls began the game with a youthful back four, Liam McMenamin starting with Hinds, Wood and Spurr and completing the game - a good outing for the youngster at right back. Richard Wood was given the armband - a taste of things to come, perhaps.
After the lively opening exchanges, it was Chris Brunt who put Wednesday on track for the win, scoring from a penalty after Leon Clarke had been brought down following a pass from Johnson. The Owls saw out the rest of the half with little difficulty.
Brian Laws kept all his substitutions for the second half, Deon Burton replacing the lacklustre Clarke on 62 minutes and working hard to get a couple of excellent chances on goal.
But it turned out to be Small's night.. on for Whelan, and blasting a 25 yarder past the Spireites keeper in the 85th minute.
A useful workout, and maybe one or two pointers to the eventual starting line up gained by Laws.
