Jeffers Signs!

Jeffers Signs!

Wednesday have at last completed the signing of a new striker after months in the market, with former Everton hitman Francis Jeffers signing a three-year deal at Hillsborough.

The former Arsenal, Rangers and England international player will go straight in to the squad that travels to Ipswich Town for the Owls' opening game of the season on Saturday after moving for an undisclosed fee.

'I am delighted to have secured a player of Francis Jeffers' calibre here at Hillsborough,' Owls boss Brian Laws told the official SWFC website.

'Francis has spent most of his career in the Premier League because of the quality that he possesses and I believe he can be a regular scorer with us in the Championship.

'We have been looking to secure a top quality striker over the summer and we certainly have that now, going into the new season, which is a really big boost for Sheffield Wednesday.'

Jeffers has already shown his qualities at this level after starting seven games on loan at Ipswich at the end of last season, netting four goals, and has also had spells at Charlton and Rangers after coming through the Everton youth ranks.

Jeffers was tipped to be the 'next Michael Owen' when he burst on to the scene for the Toffees but has failed to live up to expectations, including just four appearances after an £8 million move to Arsenal in 2001.

Think this is going to make or break Laws at Wednesday. I think he'll either score 20 goals this season or none. I'm quite optimistic though.

Laws has around 1.3 million left - he should try and get a centre back or a creative midfielder in before the Wolves home game. He should also get a loan signing in as backup. If this is the end of our spending then it's no better than mid-table but if Laws is allowed to push the boat out a little, we may have a chance at sneaking in the play-offs.
