Laws Bemoans 'Kamikaze' Owls

Wednesday boss Brian Laws was left fuming after his charges fell to a stunning 4-1 defeat to Ipswich Town on the opening day of the new Championship campaign.

Laws was in confident mood going in to the new season after the Owls' pre-season and the recent acquisition of Francis Jeffers but saw his men collapse in a tragic error-strewn first half at Portman Road on Saturday.

Lee Bullen, Peter Gilbert and Lee Grant were all getting harsh words from the away stand in Suffolk at the weekend and the Owls gaffer insists the buck doesn't stop with the aforementioned trio.

'We gifted the goals to Ipswich and it was almost kamikaze stuff. There were costly individual mistakes which were just not good enough,' Laws told the official SWFC website.

'The only positive to come from the game was that we drew the second half. I have a lot of work on my hands, I wasn't expecting so many bad performances, we almost capitulated.'

'We still had chances to get back into the game. But Frank Simek was the only shining light. He was outstanding and should have had a penalty. We know that Frank is an honest player and he does not go down.'

Wednesday had a horrendous start to the last campaign under Paul Sturrock before Laws came and turned the troops around in to promotion candidates in his six months in charge last term.

And he's confident he can produce the same turnaround this term - only not having to wait as long as last season.

He added: 'We are a better team than we showed today. We have 45 games to go and we must put things right very quickly. I felt sorry for our travelling supporters who saw a performance like this.'

Disgusted, Depressed, Embarassed. I thought Laws was going to strengthen the defence for this season! Bougherra, Hills, Coughlan gone, and replaced by.... Hinds!! Now thats team strengthening!!
