Brunt Opens Baggies Talks

Wednesday fans could be dealt another crushing kick in the teeth today with the news that star player Chris Brunt has opened talks about a move to rivals West Brom today.

The Baggies have made an offer which matches the Owls' valuation of the Northern Irish international and Brunt could be set for a move to Tony Mowbray's men before the end of the week.

'West Bromich Albion have matched our valuation for Chris Brunt,' SWFC chief executive Kaven Walker told the official SWFC website.

'We have always said that if we receive a bid for a player which matches our valuation we will allow them to speak to the respective club. Therefore we have given Chris permission to speak to West Brom.'

The left winger attracted a huge amount of interest from Premiership clubs West Ham, Manchester City and Fulham after his fine form for Wednesday last season, while Everton were also rumoured to be mounting a 3m offer.

And his future was thrown in to further doubt weeks ago when contract talks with the former Middlesbrough player broke down due to wage demands.

Wednesday fans have already voiced their concerns at the team following the crushing 4-1 opening day defeat to Ipswich Town at the weekend and the sale of Brunt is likely to open up more cause for complaint.

Fan-frigging-tastic. Could this season get off to a much worse start?

surely the powers that be have a duty, if this deal happens, to pump money into the club for team building. we are being stripped of our assets and replacing them with substandard rubbish (stand up Hinds and Grant). It shows a remarkable lack of ambition, and i for one am sick of seeing my beloved club rotting to nothing. sack the board, sack wednesdayite before the fans sack the club

Kaven Walker said Wednesday was "not a selling club" a few weeks back. You can still hear the interview at the BBC radio Sheffield website. Now they are about to sell our best player to one of our main rivals. Walker is a liar and should be kicked out of the club for deceiving the fans, most of whom shelled out 400 or more for season tickets in the belief that Wednesday were preparing to launch a play-off challenge. Walker out, Allen out.

It's a huge mistake - even if Laws gets all the 3 million, other clubs will inflate their player's prices and we'll be forced to buy dross. Which quality players are going to want to come to a club that sells their stars at the first whiff of a few quid?
onedeaddj
Here's what Walker said today. "Chris made it crystal clear to us that he does not want to be at Sheffield Wednesday." I don't blame him - the club is run by incompetent sel-obsessed morons with no ambition and Brunt was offered peanuts. "The manager won't get all of the money that we receive for Brunt, but he will be able to spend some of it and we're currently in talks with a couple of midfielders." Translation - Laws will get no more than a million to spend on two dross replacements.

I'd take 3Million for Brunt. Yes, he was amazing last season but you can't convince a player to stay if he doesn't want to. Plus we all know there are two Chris Brunts that walk (not run) on the pitch. Everybody thought we'd struggle without Bougherra, didn't we lose one out of 13 without him? We'd struggle without MacLean....didn't he miss a penatly then an open net at the weekend ? "Mansfieldowl" - Don't you think it's abit early to be criticising Grant & Hinds ??

The club have no other choice than to accept a good bid due to the contract situation. Brunts an idiot if he decides to go, and a liar. It's a bit s**t for the fans but Brunt has made it clear he doesn't want to play for Sheff Wed and IMO he hasn't got the stomach for a sustained promotion fight at a small club. there's a lot of players in this division that think they're better than they are and if they choose to find out the hard way, so be it
wednesday4europe
especisally as Hinds didn't even start!

I think Im speaking for many Owls fans when I say I will be sorry to see Brunt go. However what with contract talks coming to an end, we are faced with the dilema of losing him at the end of this season for far less than hes probebly worth. On top of that I know Brunt released a statement saying that he is happy to play for owls and give 100% even though we arnt willing to offer a new contract. However I strongly believe that this would have had a negative effect on his performance and believe that we wouldnt have seen the same Chris Brunt this season as we did last. I think that the sensible thing is to take the money now and hope to god that Allen allows more money to fund wages, that is my biggest concern.
stevebooker
eeuse, they are probably very competant players, but you dont win promotion with competant. if we sell brunt laws will probably get 500k if that, where does that leave us? it leaves us with players who cant get into teams we are allegedly competing for promotion with. why are they signing our best players and we are signing their dead wood? hinds wasnt even in the Scunthorpe team as an ever present last season!!
mansfieldowl
This is absolute ****ing disgrace and clearly shows that the current board neither want success or know how to achieve it
Smurf
well toffees ave bid 3m
papaowl
WHO IS THE NEXT ONE OUT? DAVE ALLEN and the rest of the board PLEASE.
swfcjambo
so who are these "couple of midfielders" were in talks with? or could it be more lies from the the ***** filled mouth of kevan walker? not a happy camper
mansfieldowl
our club is goin down to china town, the way the board and chairman have acted this summer has been an utter embarrassment and disgrace, somebody needs to get the shareholders together and get the club sold to someone who has vision and belief, not fickle and bitter. I absolutely cannot believe that when a potential investor has shown interest in buying the club, that the offer has not been put to the share holders, its ludicrus, if I wanted to buy a football club the first people I would approach would be the shareholders or am I totally wrong there is something sinister happening here almost as if Dave allen wants us to be content with what we have, but this latest action is really making my blood boil, what a complete and utter disgrace, as far as the team I will support them all the way but I must ask why we let coughlan go to sign Hinds ( a defender proved at this level for a player that is not, and by all means not a first choice in league 1) I have felt this situation happen before when we went down years ago signing poor/average players in the hope they would keep us up and now I feel its happening again, what a joke sort it out boys its not rocket science

One is probably Gary Teale, an ageing Derby County reserve player and the other is the European target. One of the two is a central midfielder, according to Kevan Walker, which is obviously to plug the gap upon the inevitable departure of Whelan. Listen to Walker's sneering BBC radio Sheffield interview at http://www.bbc.co.uk/southyorkshire/realmedia/sport/football/audio_archives/sheffield_wednesday/2007_8_season/walker_140807.ram

I don't have a problem with Brunt leaving because there's no point having him at the moment. I genuinely think that this season is going to be about fighting to stay up and trying to regroup later. Promotion is obviously unrealistic. If Brunt goes to West Brom then it clearly has never been about the premiership for him because he could sign a 4 year deal with them and be stuck in the Championship for the next 4 years. I think the transfer funds will be there - I just doubt the wages will be.
Disgruntled Owl
Listened to the interview. It's like listening to Allen. Don't trust him for a second. Can't see why he's bringing in a midfielder, unless he's trying to get a genuine defensive central midfielder and use Watson as an out and out centre back.
Disgruntled Owl
GOOD RIDDANCE TO BRUNT. IF HE DUNT WANT TO PLAY 4 US THEN LETS GET SHUT WHILE WE CAN GET 3MILLION 4 HIM. IF WHELAN WON'T SIGN LETS GET SHUT OF HIM TOO.
mick66owl
WAS SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON, RENEWED MY SEASON TICKET FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD BE A GOOD CHANCE OF US GETTIN PROMOTED, AND I FEEL SIC WITH THOUGHT THAT IVE BEEN ROBBED OF 4OO KNICKER BECAUSE WEVE INVESTED IN CRAP AND SEEM TO BE SELLIN QUALITY PLAYERS AND THE CLUB(THE BOARD) LACK AMBITION. WHAT CAN WE DO??????
OWL25
were ment to be going for promotion we sign a west brom cast off west brom sign our best player and that is positive??? ITS PATHETIC
smiggyswfc
Is Murphy availible?? He might be useful but wagws an obvious stumbling block! If Brunty dont wanna play he aint gonna give his all so we might as well get sumthin for him. Aint heard nuthun bout that Dennis Oliech for a while now but what i've read about him is quite promising!! Up the Owls
WestyOwl
Ive just heard our debt is reduced to 24m, that was once a figure of 30m. The owls board are turning things around amazingly, signing bougherra for 250k, selling him for 2.5m, getting brunt for nothing and maybe recieving 3m is amazing. Getting 250k for Talbot, after signing him from a non league team aswell. Our record sale upto date is Paul Warhurst at 2.65m to blackburn, i think. In a way, we are a selling club, to try and break even with the clubs debts. The debt may have been an issue, with potential buyer paul gregg?? I hope we build the team around Frank Simek, Richard Wood, Tommy Spurr, Jermaine Johnson and Marcus Tudgay as they are the future of this club.
Bigash
The debt was not a issue with Paul Gregg! IMO it was the unreasonable demand of ,he who shall not be named, over share price that scooped the deal. It fine to get the debt down but at what cost? selling all are best players: relegation and out of the premiership for decades. Bigash you named some of our players but how many will be at this club by the begining of next season?
Nightowl
I think you've got to be realistic. I would have no problem with the directors coming out and saying that we're going to sit in the Championship for a few years, clear some of the debt and sell some of the players to help that. At least that is honest and not lying to the fans. Instead, Allen and Walker keep telling us that the club is moving forward and we're going to get promoted which the majority of Wednesday fans has come to realise is a load of rubbish. Fans understand the debt we're in. If you're honest with fans they'll understand. Just don't treat us like morons.
Disgruntled Owl
How can you call a player with no work rate be our best player. The players that work each week like Simek, Wood and Deon Burton sould get the credits as our best players. To be honest it seems as if the board promised the players a takeover.....and as you can tell from our pre season results, it was just after the collapsed takeover, our results went bad. We have got in Steve Watson and Francis Jeffers, who are quality. Just need a quality left sided midfielder now. It does become clear the debt coupled with 5000 shareholders who they have no record of, is the major worry.
Bigash
If Tommy Spurr and Marcus Tudgay are the future of our club then we have no future! Only Bullen is worse than those two. And anyone who actually watched Wednesday last season will tell you that Brunt added work rate to his game.
onedeaddj
well hes just signed a 4 year deal with those *****s from the west mids
