Whelan Next For The Off?

With Chris Brunt expected to depart Hillsborough for West Brom in the next 24 hours, more bad news could follow for Owls fans with Glenn Whelan linked with a move away.

We here at Vital Sheffield Wednesday have heard that the Republic of Ireland under-21 international could well be set for move to Championship rivals Stoke City before the close of the transfer window at the end of this month.

The midfielder, like Brunt, is out of contract at the end of the current season and is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal that would seal his future at S6.

And Wednesday could well cash in on the former Manchester City youngster, with Stoke City showing interest, and Premiership club Reading also being linked with his signature.

But Wednesday chief executive Kaven Walker has told Radio Sheffield that the club are yet to receive any offers for Whelan, and is hopeful he will sign a new contract at Hillsborough following his impressive form in the blue and white last season.

Maybe if he goes to Reading, we could swap him for Bobby Convey ?

Not much chance of that i think... that would mean we'd have to actually pay a player some wages!!

C'mon - we should be honored that massive heavyweights like Stoke City are showing an interest in signing our players. Besides, "Wednesday are not a selling club" - Kaven Walker (ACTUAL QUOTE).

Why didn't Kaven Walker say "wednesday are a dead club" it would have at least been the truth

I know pre-season was a bit of a damp squib, and the first match was a shocker, and now one of our best players is leaving and a second looking like he's going to follow, but calling us dead is a bit harsh haxey!

It'l be harder losing whelan than brunt. Losing both would leave us as relegation canditates. Say we get 5m for the pair, realistically we'd get 1.5m towards new players. Why is Brian Laws sheffield wednesday manager?, because he can work with a restricted budget. Unlike our neighbours who pay 4m for a 29yr old with little resale value.

I feel sorry for Laws, having to sell or get rid of our best players, he must be thinking why the hell he took this job! He would have been far better off staying with S ****horpe!

Yeah it's tough if we gotta get rid of our 'best' players but if we wanna get anywhere we need players who will give 110%! Laws seems to know wot he's doing so far, Ipswich was a freak result and you can't judge the newbies after one performance!! Everybody expects to win their first game, we just didn't thats all. The only way is up from here and even if Laws gets another mil to spend along with the million he should have left he could get a couple of decent players, even if they are older and experienced, if it gets us up the table noone will complain then! Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson central mid partnership, Small & Johnson on the wings, Jeffers, Burton, Tudgay, Clarke (and maybe Oliech) fighting it out up front!! Grant must have sumthin about him to be selected for England at one stage and Simek, Wood, Watson and Spurr aint that bad a defence!! Come on u Wednesdayites, give the lads some support.

yeah just seen brunt has left, to be honest I would rather he did leave if he doesn't want to play for wednesday then let him go to a little club like west brom he won't amount to anything I don't think, I think the club though have definately spelled out their ambitions and relegation from this league might already be on the agenda, maybe allen thinks he has a more saleable asset if he pays off more of the debt which in truth he probably has, but and its a big but, promoted clubs to the premier league next season will recieve over 60 million quid as aidy boothroyd put it, I would rather have pushed the boat out gambled and gone for it, I have heard allen speak of his plan whilst in this league I believe he said " the first season is about survival, the second is about consolidating and finishing mid table, the third is about pushing on and aiming for promotion" will somebody put allen and walker in a room and whip their love spuds with a wet towel, he is clearly trying to make his point in the harshest fashion and will happily let this club sink if he doesn't get his own way, I love my club and I'm sick of seeing us as a laughing stock especially to the idiots on the other side of this city

Couldn't have said it better myself WestyOwl. Holl, don't get down just yet. Yes we've lost one of most naturally gifted players, but there's no point trying to hang onto those that make it obvious they want away. Brunt is a jekyll and hyde character. 3M for a lazy git is awesome! Midfield not that much of a problem unless Whelan decides to up sticks too. Then we'd be *****ed! Small and JJ on the wings. Desperately need a good centre half as Watson is far more effective in the middle. Bully is past it. Hinds not proven yet. But give the new lads a chance, eh? We've got attacking players coming out of our ears. Please Mr Laws, I'd like to see Danny Murphy in blue and white! And bring back Tommy.Disgusting that he didn't even make the squad! Far more effective than Gilbert........

While I'm at it, whatever happened to Folly Mr Laws? Another player oozing potential. You're starting line up should be: GK - Grant LB - Tommy RB - Frankie CBs - Wood & Watson (switch to midfield if Hinds proven) LM - JJ RM - Small CM - Whelan and Folly Up front - Burton and Tudgay Subs Jeffers (give the lad a chance, only arrived 2 days before the Ipswich game) Gilbert Bully Lunt Hinds opinions?

Not sure they had much option with Brunt a) Leave him on current contract and watch him collect a good part of the transfer fee himself in signing bonus/perks when he walks at the end of the season b) Pay him Premiership wages now - when we don't have the money and it would mean the same demand from the other 'championship level' players that we have at the club. He was not worth that sort of money which is why the Premier clubs did not show up c) Cash in now - make a profit of 3 million, further reduce the debt and stick to a long term plan Wednesday are NOT in a position to gamble on winning promotion, to do that and really go for it would cost 15-20 Million and against the likes of Charlton, Palace, WBA and the piggies, with their parachute funding, there are no guarantees. Next thing you know we have a bunch of 4 year contracts on premier wages that we cannot afford and then suddenly we are back in the lower leagues playing teams like Morecambe, Macclesfield and Leeds United ! Scored some great goals, turned in some good performances but take the 3 Million while we can. And while I'd be really sorry to see Whelan go the same way - we need to run this as a business not a fantasy team

and when you let your best players go db2002 then what? everything in this league is a gamble look at our squad, its as tight as it gets, yes there is a business to run and financially the books probably look good, but our squad is mediocre in comparison to other smaller clubs than ours and one or two injuries and we are screwed, its pleasing to see some of the younger players coming through but we need to bed them in with quality players around them otherwise I fear they will end up as nothing more than mediocre. Yes I want the quality and yes I want us to succeed and yes I am a realist and know exactly where we stand but looking at figures on paper and saying that was good business isn't going to replace over 20 goals last season ( brunt and macca) the reality is if we don't bring in quality then we will go down so before we all try and look at the business side lets not forget whats happening on the pitch or we will be playing morcambe, leeds and macclesfield, I really hope I'm wrong and we do get some quality in the reality is we probably won't sign anyone with any sort of pedigree and could possibly be looking at the bottom of the table rather than the top, remember Luton? ( edwards, feeney, howard) all key players, all made the club a substantial profit then the club went down coincidence or good business I'll let you decide.

really f***s me off when I see our best players going to CHAMPIONSHIP rivals - you just know that Macca will haunt us when we play Cardiff, brunty probably will too at WBA. Why would Whelan want to go to stoke???? This club is showin more and more that there is NO ambition, our best players DO NOT want to play for wednesday, and no decent player wants to come here either. Dave Allen has turned us into the laughing stock of the championship. bet S ****horpe finish above us.

Holl - Unfortunately the books don't look good, that is the whole point. Wednesday are still carrying the debt from over inflated wages and a previous inability to cash in on their (limited) assets
