'Keep Fit Class' Benefits Owls

'Keep Fit Class' Benefits Owls

A behind-closed-doors friendly with Hull on Tuesday night was the perfect opportunity for several Wednesday first teamers to work on their fitness.

The international break came too soon for Owls new boys Etienne Esajas and Akpo Sodje: both were in need of match action. Yoann Folly and Kenny Lunt bolstered the midfield of a line up which drew 0-0 with the Tigers in a specially arranged fixture.

Esajas and Sodje both completed 90 minutes, Lee Grant and Rob Burch both saw some action, and a young back four featuring future Owls stars Liam McMenamin and Mark Beevers did well to hold off a Hull strike force augmented by former Premiership stars Jay Jay Okocha and Henrik Pedersen.

Owls assistant manager Russ Wilcox told the SWFC official web site: 'We had the most clear-cut chances and the attitude and application from our boys was first class.. it was an excellent work-out and I was really pleased for our young defenders because three of our back four were young lads and performed very well. I was very pleased with the performance overall.'

The Owls line up: Grant (Burch); McMenamin, Liversidge, Beevers, Gilbert (Kay), McAllister (McClements), Folly, Lunt, Esajas, Sodje, Boden (Bradley).

In other news: the date for the Carling Cup tie against Everton has been announced: Wednesday, September 26 with a 7.45pm kick-off. Tickets priced at £15 for adults and £7 for concessions.

Maybe, just maybe, Folly just aint been fit for ages, which would explain his mystery omission from 1st team football! Laws might wanna get him fit now after missing out on a center back b4 the window shut. Perhaps he's thinking of playing Watson in defence or maybe giving Beevers another go?? Anything is better than Bullen, i saw him in a reserve game against Birmingham last season, just before he came back into the first team after a lay off, he looked very poor at that level so the following weekend when his name was in the first x1 i was more than surprised. He ended up staying in for the rest of the season getting praise from people left, right and center!!!!! I think Whelan and Folly is the strongest central midfield we have and although Watson is handy there i reckon he could do a good job at the back and maybe Wood could learn a bit from him? Even if it is just till Jan! Anyone?

Ahh i see Auckland, didn't know that! Just read on one site that Laws has said he was impressed by Esajas, Sodje AND Folly during the friendly with Hull so maybe things are looking up!

when folly came on against hartlepool he looked really up for it..got his foot in ..broke up there play really well..then scored the winner get him in!..why not give beevers another go at the back..all we are going to get in the loan market is premiership teams sending there youngsters to us for experience..why not put are own in..i thought he did really well when he played the odd time last season..spurr is a good center back!..why not bring gilbert back and give spurr a go at center back!..i feel sorry for the lad being played out of position all the time, he hasnt got the pace to be a full back and keeps wandering back to his natural position in the center..the poor lad gets exposed every week because of it.

folly is quality we need him in the side, I'm gonna stick up for bullen though, he has bled for the club these last couple of years and although he hasn't made the best start I'm sure the boy will come good in the end and besides there are a few of them that haven't started well either.

Agree with you all. Folly and Whelan are the best combo we have in the middle of the park. Lunt is the most ineffective regular starter we have. Never rated him. Also, yes, give Tommy a go alongside Wood at centre back. He's a great prospect, a great tackler, but just doesn't have a clue going forward down the flank. Though Gilbert is a liability at left back too..... This would free up Watson, then Laws could try out Watson and Folly with the one and only Glenn Whelan. I'd be tempted to plump for Watson as he is more defense minded.
