Stoke Target Whelan Swoop

Championship rivals Stoke City are set to swoop for highly-rated Owls midfielder Glenn Whelan according to reports in today's papers.

The rumour linking the Owls midfield man of steel arose at the start of the season and the Daily Star is now reporting the Irishman could be set for a loan move to the Britannia Stadium after Tony Pulis failed with a permanent capture.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 captain has been a key player for Wednesday this season and picked up the player of the season gong last term despite being transfer listed by former boss Paul Sturrock.

But he's yet to put pen to paper over a new deal at Hillsborough, which could see Wednesday cash in on his services rather than lose him on a free transfer at the end of the season - a scenario which has already seen Chris Brunt depart for West Brom.

Any move for the former Manchester City youth product would prove another blow to Brian Laws with Whelan a vital cog to turn the Owls' stuttering start to the season around.
