Laws Continues Player Search

Wednesday may have a break from league action this weekend but Owls boss Brian Laws is still busy looking for a new centre-back to bolster his squad.

Laws was hoping to have a new defender in place before the close of the transfer window, with Reading's Sam Sodje all set to put pen to paper on a deal at Hillsborough after agreeing terms.

But the Nigerian instead opted to stay closer to home with a move to Championship rivals Charlton Athletic, leaving Wednesday high and dry days before the close of the window.

And the decision has left the Owls boss scouring the market for a player to join the club on loan, although Laws insist he won't be pressing the panic button and bringing a player in for the sake of it.

'I've been checking on the fitness levels and availability of potential targets and have watched games this week,' Laws told the Sheffield Star.

'But if I bring in a player, he's got to be better than what I've already got.'

Laws has been tinkering with his back four throughout the start of the Owls' dissapointing start to the new campaign, with two goalkeepers used and seven different men at the back.

And the Owls gaffer has revealed he'll be relying on the experience of Steve Watson to fill in at the back while Wednesday get their man.

'We know we can use Steve Watson at the back. We might have to put him there. He has a calmness,' he added.

'He's already shown he can play at the back or in midfield. I tend to think that any new player would have to be better than Steve.'
