Owls loanee Graham Kavanagh will return to Premiership side Sunderland once his one-month loan deal has expired after this Saturday's home clash with Blackpool.
Owls boss Brian Laws was keen to hold on to the experienced midfielder to help the Owls climb out of their current sticky situation near the bottom of the Championship.
But Black Cats boss Roy Keane said he would make a decision on the future of the Irishman this week - and the former Manchester United man has decided to give Kav his chance in the big time.
The former Cardiff and Stoke man arrived at Hillsborough with the intention of returning to Sunderland once he built up his match fitness in the blue and white of Wednesday.
And he enjoyed a fine spell at S6, helping Wednesday to their first two wins of the season against Hull City and Norwich City respectively, while also playing in the victory over his former club Stoke at the weekend.
The departure of the 33-year-old will leave Laws with a gap to fill in the centre of midfield following Saturday's game with Blackpool, although Steve Watson could well be fit to return and slot in alongside Glenn Whelan.
