We Have A World Cup Winner!

Wednesday will be able to say they once had a World Cup winner on their books after FIFA revealed Owls legend Ron Springett will be receiving a medal for the 1966 World Cup.

The goalkeeper, who made 33 appearances for the Three Lions, was part of the England squad that won the world's biggest competition on home soil back in '66, but didn't receive a medal because he didn't feature in the tournament.

And FIFA have now revealed that every finalist between 1930 and 1974 will be rewarded with a medal, with a medal going to the families of those that have died.

Ron made an impressive 384 appearances between the sticks for Wednesday, and will be remembered for continuniong to live in London and training with QPR following his move to Hillsborough.

Springett will join other members of the '66 squad, including Jimmy Greaves, Peter Bonetti and Norman Hunter in receiving the winning medals, which are expected to be presented at Wembley Stadium by Sepp Blatter.

'It's justice for all those players,' said Blatter.

'Richard Caborn brought it up by saying it's not right that only the 11 players got a medal.

'I believe that is right. We will go through our history records and reproduce medals, and we will give those medals to all those who have been in the squad and not just those who were on the field of play.'

The stopper is thought to be the greatest 'keeper ever to go between the sticks at Wednesday, and was the most capped player at the time - a record which was held for 26 years.
