'If It's Football, It's Vital'

'Something Special' For Laws

Wednesday boss Brian Laws was delighted that his charges could pull something special out of the bag to claim all three points in the South Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough last night.

Chances were few and far between in a first-half battle at S6, with any betting man likely to put his money firmly on a stalemate going in to the half-time break.

And Owls boss Laws insists he never expected the game to be a spectacle - with a full-blooded, scrappy encounter the more likely outcome according the the Wednesday supremo, with 'something special' always likely to decide the match.

'When you are in a local derby surely you are not going to expect flowing football, playing like you're Brazil,' Laws told the official SWFC website.

'It was a heavy pitch, they are at it, they are a team that's in form, we are a team in form, neither wants to give an inch. That's how it was in the first half and I thought it needed something special to break the deadlock.'

And Laws heaped praise on new signing Akpo Sodje, who bagged the winning goal, and made it three goals in as many matches in the blue and white stripes.

'The ball in from O'Brien was sensational and what a finish from Sodje! He out-jumped everybody, timed his leap to perfection and smashed it in the back of the net.

'I am very pleased for him because he has been the catalyst in the way we have been working in this run. He sets things off with his energy and commitment and everybody is delighted for him. He has got the biggest grin you could ever see and rightly so.'
