Owls Duo Linked With Moves

Owls Duo Linked With Moves

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and the transfer rumours are already in overdrive, with two Wednesday players linked with a move away from Hillsborough.

Highly-rated youngsters Frank Simek and Glenn Whelan have already been linked with moves to the Premier League, and now their names are being banded about again, even more so with the Owls' financial position up in the air.

American right-back Simek was linked Everton during the summer, and that link has been rekindled, despite the international defender signing a new contract with the Owls during the summer.

But it's thought that Toffees boss David Moyes has still been keeping a watchful eye over the former Arsenal youth product, and could well make a swoop for his man come January.

Former Manchester City youth product Whelan is yet to sign a new contract with the club, with his current deal set to expire in the summer, and the Owls could well cash in on the Irishman in January, with Bolton linked with his services.

January could well prove to be a tough month for Wednesday, at least off the pitch, as boss Brian Laws looks set to sit down with the board and discuss the money available to spend to bolster his squad for a possible play-off push.

And the sale of Whelan and Simek could well mirror the deal which saw Madjid Bougherra leave S6 at the same time last season, to enable Laws to spend some cash at bringing other players in.

If they go, we have to replace them.. no chance to make do with what we have.

but he wasnt given the money for bougherras sale. If simek went it would be a disaster, every1 is replaceable but not for the 100k well have to spend... watch out exeter reserves where coming for your second best player!!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo not Simek. Defence crap already!!
10/12/2007 10:05:00
Whelan is definately off, January or when his contract runs out i dont know, but as for Simek, if he does leave would want nothing less than £3mill for him. Would be a big blow for us but as Auckland say's they need to be replaced and straight away.
will it ever happen

Noooooooooo not Frankie!!!!
10/12/2007 11:20:00
i'd take 3m for frankie anyday, he's good but realistically if we could get 3m for a right back we have to take it. remember frankie, whelan, brunt and bougherra all cost next to nothing with a bit of money we should be able to recruit better young players worth more in the future and keep growing to a position where we can sell our players for serious money and buy good replacements a la WBA

If wednesday got offered £3million for him, they will take it. Would be a massive blow for us. But if he does go, BL needs to get all of the cash from the sale so that he can bring a replacement in and possibly some others in aswell.
will it ever happen

sell sell sell if laws is given some money to get replacements. lets not forget this time there is nobody tosop laws havin money sum this time. (no names mentioned). but he must be given the green light if they are sold . take 1mill for whelan and seen as simek as a good length contract lets hold out for 4mill seen as everton bought that muppet from the the blunts *****jeikla for the same money

DA gone for 2 mins and everyones gone spend mad. If we sold FS for 3 mil there's no way we should spend 3 mil on a right back to replace him, 1 mil at the absolute most, half a mil to bring in johnson and kav, another half a mil could bring in three prem players on 10k a week on loan until the end of the season- with change left, and the 1 million left back into the club (poss to negoiate GW new contract - 1mil over 3 years means we could offer an extra 6.5k a week to him). Obviously all these are assuming we could attrack the players, but as we've recently seen with SMc, CB and GW money talks.............. Assuming we could pull this off does anyone really think we'd have a better chance at getting promoted if we kept FS instead of buying MJ and GW, getting three good young prem players on loan until the end of the season and having a chance at keeping GW, I don't

Have to pretty much agree with wednesday4 europe on this one. The whole plan has to be to bring in low cost talent - build them up sell them on and then use the cash to (1) pay off some debt - which in turn reduces interest payments and therefore makes annual balance sheet better in terms of cash for salary and in makes club more attractive to potential investors (which is what DA was sort of trying to do ...but let's not start that debate all over again) (2) use some cash for a couple of good short term contracts that act as cover for the sold players or strengthen team in other places (3) buy 2/3 young talents (when they are available - not immediate) ..this is where Laws needs to earn his money so that you can repeat the process again next season. I know people will say what is the point ...but the point is that this is a sensible long term game ..rather than get ourselves into another wage driven downward spiral that we cannot afford. In the meantime if we make the play offs or get a cup run then we do the same with the cash (pay some debt and buty some young talent) ...if we make the premiership (unlikely at this stage but look at Watford) then you clear the debt and start to build forward this point with no debt and Premiership status there would be investors all over us.
