Beevers Bags New Owls Deal

Beevers Bags New Owls Deal

Wednesday have secured the services of top young talent Mark Beevers until 2012 after the centre-back put pen-to-paper on a new improved deal at Hillsborough today.

The Barnsley-born defender has been highly impressive since breaking on to the scene, cementing a place in the heart of the Owls' defence in recent weeks despite being just 18, and has already attracted the interest of some big-name clubs.

But the decision to stay at S6 will be a big boost to Owls' fans and Brian Laws, who sees the youngster as a huge part of the future of the club.

And Beevers insists he's delighted to bag the new deal at S6.

He told the official Owls' website: 'I was offered a new contract last week and now I'm delighted to sign with Sheffield Wednesday.

'It's the right club for me as a young player because I've been in and around the first team of late, so I am very pleased.'

Beevers has enjoyed a rapid rise to the Wednesday first team, being part of the side that saw off Sheffield United 2-0 in recent weeks and also being picked as backup for the England under-19's squad despite playing just a handful of games in the blue right.

Former boss Paul Sturrock put huge praise on the defender, saying he could well be a future England international star, and the youngster has already impressed the Wednesday faithful with his mature performances this season.

And boss Brian Laws said:: 'It is a fantastic move from the football club's point of view and from Mark Beeevers' point of view. To tie him up until 2012 is a great coup for the club. It is right for the player, it's right for his development and it is right for the progress he has made.'

2008 is getting better and better, we beat the pigs and now get our best up n coming star signed up... just need a takeover and whelan signed up... and maybe another win against the pigs, maybe thats asking too much! well done beevers for being loyal!!! whelan take note!

Great news, one of the best defenders in the division and still only a baby!!
will it ever happen
28/01/2008 17:06:00
this is great, finally some forward thinking from the club, young guy whose going to get better and better and a long contract!
28/01/2008 17:46:00
This is good news - but i wouldn't get too carried away with the loyalty aspect. Wednesday offered him more money for today and more security for tomorrow - he'd have to be stupid not to accept that deal. In exchange for the package, Wednesday can be sure that they will not get caught with an 'out of contract - walk for nothing situation'...... But between now and 2012 money will talk - and either Wednesday, Beevers or Both will cash in quickly enough, what this deal hopefully does is make sure that there are no losers in S6...... Unfortunately that will not be the case with Whelan if we don't do a deal in the next few days.

its such a shame about whelan, hes a good footballer,24 and the sort we need here, but players are greedy little blights for the most part,,well done beevers,we"ve unearthed a gem,and now weve tied him to a new contract,he cant just leave for nowt in the same unsavory manner,.we need players that wear the shirt with pride cos playing for wednesday is a privilage, and we want footballers here the understand that,.wood and beevers are two good young center backs, hinds has looked better of late after a shaky start,so its not all bad,tho johnson was a rock,,.does anyone rekon we will get anyone else in??
raven jet byrne
28/01/2008 20:06:00
Don't think we will see anyone raven jet byrne and don't think MJ is needed with Hinds and Beevers doing so well, would can fill in if necessary. Though I don't think Whelans being greedy, he is one of the best centre mids in this division an deserves to be rewarded with a contract fitting that, we haven't offered him one since August, that's not his fault, hardly greedy he's stated he's never asked to leave or said he would. The board just need to sort it out an offer him what he deserves.
29/01/2008 14:44:00
McQuaid ... I agree with all you say - but the problem is that as 'one of the best central mids in this division' the contract that is fitting is three years at a salary similar to a Premier League player. ..I mean just think about the best midfielders in the division - many of them are being paid out of parachute funding at places like Watford, Pigs (what do you think Speed is on- and he's at the end of his career), Charlton and West Brom.... To pay that kind of money Wednesday would probably have to foresake 2 or 3 decent wage offers to others - and commit to a 3 year term when they have not even secured their place in teh Championship - not good business cash in now. As for Whelan you can't blame him for wanting to secure his a good deal at this stage of his career - I don't think he is being greedy. ...all this 'I never asked to leave' is BS ...he knows the score and this is just a way of keeping all his options open and trying to look as though he is doing the right thing by the Wednesday faithful
29/01/2008 16:11:00
Point taken DB2002 but when i say he deserves a contract fitting his ability I'm speaking in terms of the Wednesday squad, not the championship, Lunt is on MUCH more then him I'm led to believe, how can that be justified ?? And we haven't offered him one since August ???? WHAT do we expect him to sign...there's nothing there
29/01/2008 16:59:00
Agree 100% on Lunt - but that is just the way contracts go as deals overlap (ie the end of Whelan old deal which he signed when he was unproven, versus newer deal with someone that was supposed to be decent !!!) .... Trouble is what do Wednesday gain from offering him what they can afford if that is below what he is worth - he will turn it down and move anyway (this is potentially the best contract he will get in his career - so he needs to make it worth while)....I think the current situation is the best one, he is incentivised to play his best because he is obviously in the shop window. At the same time Wednesday don't want to give him an offer that he can then use to strengthen HIS negotiating position with the buying club ...which could impact how attractive he is to another club and how much the other club are willing to pay fo the Transfer fee portion of the deal.............. having said all of that Wednesday will probably screw things up and end up with him walking for free !!!
