Owls Down To Two Fit Strikers

As if things weren't bad enough for Brian Laws and his Wednesday side, injuries to Akpo Sodje and Leon Clarke and another set-back for Francis Jeffers leaves the Owls with just two fit strikers.

Former Port Vale man Sodje, who has made a big impression since making the switch to Hillsborough, was on his comeback from a previous injury but was stretchered off in last night's 2-1 defeat at Wolves.

But the recurrance of his old ankle injury could well see the lanky hitman sidelined for around four-six weeks, with the Owls knowing the full extent of his injury later this week.

The injury follows the news that Francis Jeffers suffered an injury set-back and will be out for six weeks, while Leon Clarke is also set to go under the knife for a cartilage repair which should also keep him out for between four and six weeks.

And Owls boss Laws was left to rue the bad luck on the injury front.

'Sodje came off with an ankle injury that looks as bad as the first time he did it. He's gone over on his ankle again. He's in a bit of pain,' Laws told the Sheffield Star.

'It's very concerning for us. Leon Clarke looks as if he's going to go in for an operation to repair a cartilage and may be out for four to six weeks. Sodje could be out for a similar length of time, and Jeffers could be out for a while.

'We go into this next month facing four games at home. They're going to be crucial to us. We need ammunition - at the moment we've got two fit strikers.

'We thought we'd turned the corner and we thought we had players fit; now we've had a performance like this and we have another injured player.'

Wednesday now go in to their hectic month of fixtures with just two fit strikers in the shape of Marcus Tudgay and Deon Burton, who are both set to get the nod for the visit of Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Owls are unlikely to dip in to the transfer market before the close of the current window at midnight on Thursday, with Luke Boden expected to get a chance to gain some experience in and around the first team in the coming weeks, while Wade Small and Jermaine Johnson have also operated in attack this term.

What now? No money, no sign of new investment. Sodje, Jeffers and Clarke out for approx 6 weeks, leavin only Burton and Tudgay up front. Bottom 5 finish.

BOTTOM 5?! thats hopefull! 23rd and no higher unless we get a quality goal scorer, whether that be loan or permanent
mansfieldowl
I'll take 21st no problem, still cant see us going down, at least finally Boden might get a chance to play, did well at Burnley and we have all seen how well Beevers has made the step up.
McQuaid-Owls
not hopeful, optimistic!
swfcjambo
just be glad clarke isnt one of them. the idea of a youth player being drafted in doesn't fill me with optimism that we can beat the drop thoug. we really needed two or three players in this january to help secure our position in this league. going to struggle now

should have played jeffers in the few games when he was nearly fit!! wouldn't have done him any more harm than whatever he has been doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Devastating news....Why Oh Why do we read the same old story of injured strikers at Hillsborough !! They play 6 or so games then they down again with injury. Doesnt help with consistancy which is something we sadley lack so often, a key factor I feel in Wednesdays downfall each season. I would chance one of the youngsters...who knows....I mean just look whats happened with Beevers over last 3 month, it would be nice if we had a few more success stories waiting to be told in the youth set up. UP THE OWLS !!!

deon needs to step the ***** up now!!!

dear oh dear oh dear. something has to happen one way or another we have to find some money from somewhere to allow laws to fetch someone in on loan at least. sounds a good idea now to throw derek hobsons money to one side doesnt it? well done the board. i know people on ere b4 have chucked this idea 2 one side but wba are paying hartsons contract up so sign him up till end of season if we can find the money

Should the people upstairs who supposedly know the game have seen this coming if they had done their homework on Jeffers we would surely have thought again befrore they signed him,a calculated risk I think its called, in the last six seasons before Wednesday he has struggled to make 15 appearances for any team ,why did we think this would be different when we sign him .A massive utlay on a transfer fee could have kept Stevie Mac for that money. No doubt he looks a good prospect when fit Jeffersbut a gamble Ifear we will lose.wolves were keen to get rid of Clarke now we know why SODJE is the biggest loss Ifear for the season now it could be all down hill from now lets hope Tudgay and Burton can do it again for us fingers crossed all you wednesdayites.

agpatch- agree ......I heard (not confirmed) that Jeffers has NEVER started 6 games in a row in his career for a team - when you are a cash starved club like we are, you really have to take these things into account before you splash out on your one decent signing... Jeffers has been a huge let down/waste.

theres some sort of curse at hillsborough with injurys always has been always will be looks like guna hav to go through the motions again as we always do evry season till somone buys us out even derby been bought out by some millionaire american
boothe
thank the lord we have been saved leon clarke is delaying is op and going to play through the pain poor lad
mick66owl
That’s brilliant news about Clarke, we can look forward to him being gifted goal scoring opportunities after opportunities and wasting every single one!!!
LP-OWL
He's fat ,he's bald ,he's welsh and he's got ginger pubes. Its super johnny hartson come to save the day. With him and clarke up front play offs here we come. Is there a guiness record for the worlds fattest strike force?
greeny9
we have a glorious history of rotund strikers.... booth..... hirst..... veradi.....has hartson signed? its on an unofficial west brom site
mansfieldowl
And two world class strikers they are, many clubs are so jealous of us!!
will it ever happen
