Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan has left the club to join Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, while Graham Kavanagh comes in on loan until the end of the season as his replacement.
Whelan's departure to the Owls' Championship rivals will be a blow to Wednesday fans, albeit somewhat expected, with the Irishman's current contract set to run out at the end of the season.
The former Manchester City youngster had made a big impression in the blue and white stripes since his arrival at S6 and had attracted the interest of a number of clubs including West Brom and Bolton in recent weeks.
But it may come as something as a shock that Whelan has decided to make the switch to Stoke City, after making 159 appearances for the Owls, bagging 16 goals along the way.
But with Whelan on his way out of S6, Owls boss Brian Laws has acted quickly to plug the gap, bagging the signature of Graham Kavanagh on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.
The former Cardiff and Stoke midfielder has already enjoyed a successful loan stint at Wednesday earlier in the season and was touted as a possible January signing.
Laws told SWFC.co.uk: 'I would like to thank Glenn Whelan for his attitude, application and hard work since I have been at this football club. The only thing he couldn't give me was his signature and I have a responsibility to Sheffield Wednesday.
'A decision had to be made whether to keep him or let him go and while he is worth a lot of money today he would have been worth virtually nothing in transfer fees tomorrow.'
Laws has already revealed that the Wednesday board have promised that all the funds from the deal to sell Whelan will be made available to further strengthen his squad.
