Kav In As Whelan Departs

Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan has left the club to join Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, while Graham Kavanagh comes in on loan until the end of the season as his replacement.

Whelan's departure to the Owls' Championship rivals will be a blow to Wednesday fans, albeit somewhat expected, with the Irishman's current contract set to run out at the end of the season.

The former Manchester City youngster had made a big impression in the blue and white stripes since his arrival at S6 and had attracted the interest of a number of clubs including West Brom and Bolton in recent weeks.

But it may come as something as a shock that Whelan has decided to make the switch to Stoke City, after making 159 appearances for the Owls, bagging 16 goals along the way.

But with Whelan on his way out of S6, Owls boss Brian Laws has acted quickly to plug the gap, bagging the signature of Graham Kavanagh on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.

The former Cardiff and Stoke midfielder has already enjoyed a successful loan stint at Wednesday earlier in the season and was touted as a possible January signing.

Laws told SWFC.co.uk: 'I would like to thank Glenn Whelan for his attitude, application and hard work since I have been at this football club. The only thing he couldn't give me was his signature and I have a responsibility to Sheffield Wednesday.

'A decision had to be made whether to keep him or let him go and while he is worth a lot of money today he would have been worth virtually nothing in transfer fees tomorrow.'

Laws has already revealed that the Wednesday board have promised that all the funds from the deal to sell Whelan will be made available to further strengthen his squad.

didnt they say that all the money from bougherra would be made available for transfers aswell though??
smiggyswfc
well, yeah. They said some of the money would be made available from Bougherra sale (about 1million). And they also said some of the money would be made available from Brunt sale (again about 1million), plus some money from Talbot sale! Blah blah blah! Promises promises promises! So that means we have about 2.5million (minus Jeffers 700,000) = 1.8million! Dont think Laws will see a penny of this!!

more chance of platting fog

We have spent the bougherra and brunt money mate. Etienne Esajas cost over seven figures, we added to the wage bill with Hinds, Grant, Burch, Watson, Kavanagh + Johnson on prevoius loans, Akpo Sodje(350k), Francis Jeffers(700k), Leon Clark(250k) When the season has finished we still have to pay wages without the income of gate receipts. Glen Whelan went for 500k, so that hopefully will be spent on a talented young central midfielder in the summer.

the squad looks stronger now, solid experience in the middle with the option of flyers on the wing, just a bit worried about lunt, he is not ever gonna give us anything back, seems like money is being sucked out of the club when laws needs evry bit he can get, surely this can't be right
dbblue
Wage bill and transfer money are 2 seperate things though, none of the money brought in from Brunt & Bougherra sale was put to players wages, otherwise we could have afforded to keep whelan! Players wages brought in was balanced by players wages leaving (brunt, bougherra, mclean etc) Didnt think Esajas cost that much to be honest, thought it was only a small fee it that, around 100,000
johnnywalker69
Life goes on and lets get on with it. Lets get behind the players and BL for rest of the season and we may just pull away from the relegation zone.
will it ever happen
seven figures for esajas??? pull the other one about 250k more like we have hardly seen a penny from the 6 million we got for brunt and bougherra, we are officially a selling club with less prospects then stoke ******** city!
ozzietheowl
yes we are a selling club and it hurts
dbblue
We paid less than 250K for Esajas actually, as there were [as always] options attached. But I am splitting hairs. The money we were promised can be found by going through the wardrobe and into Narnia. You will also find the new investors there too - right in front of your face. You will even manage a small chuckle when you realise how blind you became. In fact, should you venture even further, you will find Fit Strikers too.
Smurf
fit strikers - where?
dbblue
Have to say, for me the loss of Whelan isn't quite so tough to take with us bringing Kav in, thought he might be snapped up by a higher club. Looking forward to seeing him in midfield alongside Wallwork. Just need some strikers fit and we're good to go I reckon! Up the Owls!
SuperOwls
Wage bill and Transfer money come from the same pot, at the end of the day. When we signed jeffers for 700k plus a big wage, we could have signed Billy Sharp for 1.5m and paid a much smaller wage. It all balances out. Etienne Esajas did cost seven figures by the way. Bought as a direct replacement for Brunt, its just a shame he's struggling to adapt.
Bigash
yep wages and transfer fee are seperate bcos we didnt strengthen earlier did we bcos ther was no money left in wages budget but therewas some left in transfer one
mick66owl
Exactly mick66owl, in the summer we were bidding 2million for Rasiak, but yet we couldnt afford to offer Brunt an improved pay deal! So transfer funds and wage budget are a completely different thing. Seven figures for Esajas??! Are you sure?? Seven figures is going into the millions!? I think you're in Narnia Bigash! lol
johnnywalker69
dbblue - How on earth have you missed the sarcasm in my post above?
Smurf
Esajas fee was undisclosed i thought and i can't imagine it was a 7 figure deal, find that hard to believe.
McQuaid-Owls
It wasn't, it was closer to 150K, rising to 250K.
Smurf
smurf - that wardrobe was massive
dbblue
I aint making anything up. The earlier post by johnnywalker69 made me a little peed off, when he said """"So that means we have about 2.5million (minus Jeffers 700,000) = 1.8million"""" Which is absolute poo crap, Because as you can see, Akpo Sodje(350k), Francis Jeffers(700k), Leon Clark(250k), Esajas(1m) and small fees wer paid for the likes of Hinds, Grant and wasnt even Jermaine Johnson(400k) signed in last years january transfer window?????
Bigash
well hinds and grant came on bosmans so they were free.
mick66owl
Gutted about Whelan as everyone is. Don't blame him for going though. The best we could offer him was a 2 year contract, probably on slightly more money than he was getting. The Owls will kick on though - one player doesn't make a team. And to be fair, compared to last season Whelan was poor. Few goals and no where near as consistent. Still think he was worth over a 1M mind. Brian is doing the best he can with the pocket money he's getting from the board. Kav is a better all round player than Glenn. Though our average age in central midfield has shot up to 55! We need investment soon. I can chip a fiver in. 10 should buy the club! Showumni looks promising on paper too. A taller Sodje by the sounds of it. Can only be a good thing. Can't wait to sing......."What's that coming over the hill, is it Showumni, is it Showumni?" Also can't wait til next week when we get Berbatov on loan......
S6Apple
Esajas was no way near signed for 1million Bigash!! get your facts right before saying my comments are 'poo crap'! And Leon Clarke was signed before Bougherra was sold. No fees were paid for Hinds & Grant! Are you Kaven Walker in disguise??
johnnywalker69
You telling me to get my facts right ????? Mr. We have 1.8m, lol. Im giving you the correct facts and i'm going to email football heaven on bbc radio sheffield to ask the correct amount for Esajas. I swear its over 800k!!!!
Bigash
never
johnnywalker69
By the way if you've heard Brian Laws speak in the last few days He says the Whelan transfer fee of 500k, will come in handy for a couple of quality loan signings wages. So transfer money and wages come from the same pot, but Ofcourse i agree you limit and budget them differently.
Bigash
Esajas was bought for 250k and not a penny more!!
will it ever happen
