Kav In As Whelan Departs

Kav In As Whelan Departs

Wednesday midfielder Glenn Whelan has left the club to join Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, while Graham Kavanagh comes in on loan until the end of the season as his replacement.

Whelan's departure to the Owls' Championship rivals will be a blow to Wednesday fans, albeit somewhat expected, with the Irishman's current contract set to run out at the end of the season.

The former Manchester City youngster had made a big impression in the blue and white stripes since his arrival at S6 and had attracted the interest of a number of clubs including West Brom and Bolton in recent weeks.

But it may come as something as a shock that Whelan has decided to make the switch to Stoke City, after making 159 appearances for the Owls, bagging 16 goals along the way.

But with Whelan on his way out of S6, Owls boss Brian Laws has acted quickly to plug the gap, bagging the signature of Graham Kavanagh on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.

The former Cardiff and Stoke midfielder has already enjoyed a successful loan stint at Wednesday earlier in the season and was touted as a possible January signing.

Laws told SWFC.co.uk: 'I would like to thank Glenn Whelan for his attitude, application and hard work since I have been at this football club. The only thing he couldn't give me was his signature and I have a responsibility to Sheffield Wednesday.

'A decision had to be made whether to keep him or let him go and while he is worth a lot of money today he would have been worth virtually nothing in transfer fees tomorrow.'

Laws has already revealed that the Wednesday board have promised that all the funds from the deal to sell Whelan will be made available to further strengthen his squad.

well, yeah. They said some of the money would be made available from Bougherra sale (about £1million). And they also said some of the money would be made available from Brunt sale (again about £1million), plus some money from Talbot sale! Blah blah blah! Promises promises promises! So that means we have about £2.5million (minus Jeffers £700,000) = £1.8million! Dont think Laws will see a penny of this!!

We have spent the bougherra and brunt money mate. Etienne Esajas cost over seven figures, we added to the wage bill with Hinds, Grant, Burch, Watson, Kavanagh + Johnson on prevoius loans, Akpo Sodje(350k), Francis Jeffers(700k), Leon Clark(250k) When the season has finished we still have to pay wages without the income of gate receipts. Glen Whelan went for 500k, so that hopefully will be spent on a talented young central midfielder in the summer.

the squad looks stronger now, solid experience in the middle with the option of flyers on the wing, just a bit worried about lunt, he is not ever gonna give us anything back, seems like money is being sucked out of the club when laws needs evry bit he can get, surely this can't be right

Wage bill and transfer money are 2 seperate things though, none of the money brought in from Brunt & Bougherra sale was put to players wages, otherwise we could have afforded to keep whelan! Players wages brought in was balanced by players wages leaving (brunt, bougherra, mclean etc) Didnt think Esajas cost that much to be honest, thought it was only a small fee it that, around £100,000

Life goes on and lets get on with it. Lets get behind the players and BL for rest of the season and we may just pull away from the relegation zone.
will it ever happen

We paid less than 250K for Esajas actually, as there were [as always] options attached. But I am splitting hairs. The money we were promised can be found by going through the wardrobe and into Narnia. You will also find the new investors there too - right in front of your face. You will even manage a small chuckle when you realise how blind you became. In fact, should you venture even further, you will find Fit Strikers too.
