United vs. Wednesday

Bramall Lane, Sheffield

Tuesday April 8

Preview: United v Owls

This is it, the big one...again, the chance for either the red and white side of the city to enjoy the bragging rights on Wednesday morning, or the blue and white side.

But it's not just your average Steel City Derby, it's much more than that, for Wednesday in particular - with the clash the Owls' game in hand on most of the teams around them in the relegation scrap.

A victory at Bramall Lane, for the first time in years, would give Wednesday a huge boost in their battle against the drop - something which has a much bigger priority than simply three points against Kevin Blackwell's troops.

The Blades too have something to aim for other than bragging rights, with former assistant boss Blackwell returning to Bramall Lane to help steer the Blades towards the play-offs after a disastrous spell at the helm by Bryon Robson - who oversaw the Blades' 2-0 defeat at Hillsborough earlier in the season.

Let battle commence...

Vital Quotes:

Owls' captain Richard Wood told the official Wednesday website:

'We dominated them at Hillsborough so they'll be out for revenge but we're full of confidence right now.

'The lads can't wait to get to get out there. I know we have a few players out but we still have the quality to keep United at bay and get a result.'

'...Beattie is a quality striker so we need to be on our toes but we've been on a great run defensively, although it's no secret we need a win. If we can get that against United, we'll be buzzing for the rest of the season.'

Blades' boss Kevin Blackwell told the official Blades website:

'It is a game that you shouldn't need to talk up. I will walk in on Tuesday and shouldn't have to say anything... but try keeping me quiet! I will be at them.

'We have a job to do, we have two massive teams in this city and one has to be on top and we want that to be us.'

'...There was an interesting comment from one of the players at Barnsley the other week who said he didn't want the lads to feel like they did after the game at Hillsborough so they know. I might remind them about that.'

United Team News:

Rob Hulse and Paddy Kenny will both be itching to get back in the red and white shirt for the big match after missing out in the 3-0 win over Leicester City at the weekend due to injury.

Kenny was replaced by Ian Bennett at the weekend, who kept a clean sheet against the Owls' relegation rivals, although should Kenny fit and ready for the visit of the Owls, he'll be keen to taek the number one spot from Bennett, and Blackwell is sure to agree should he pass a late fitness test.

But Blackwell could decide against including dangerman Hulse should the former Leeds United man regain full fitness.

James Beattie came back in to the side to replace Hulse at the weekend, and promptly bagged a hat-trick in the first half, and is a certain starter on Tuesday night.

Billy Sharp will also be desperate to start, not only as a boyhood Blades' fan, but also because he was subject to interest from Wednesday in the pre-season but opted for a move to Bramall Lane instead.

And Blackwell is sure to recognise Sharp's need to play in the game, and is likely to stick with the same front two that destroyed the Foxes at the weekend.

Other than that, Blackwell should keep the rest of his side in tact following their improved form of late, with no fresh injury concerns going in to the clash.

Player to watch: James Beattie

It goes without saying really doesn't it? A Premiership class player playing his trade at a Championship club, who is sure to be snapped up by a top-flight outfit next season. Without Beattie's goals the Blades could well be in the same trouble as Wednesday, and he's sure to be the biggest threat on Tuesday night.

Wednesday Team News:

Where do you start? Brian Laws' preparations for the big Steel City clahs haven't exactly been ideal with the treatmeant room filling up week after week.

Franck Songo'o is the latest star to have picked up an injury in the 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe, and as Wednesday's biggest attacking threat, Laws will be giving the Portsmouth loanee until the last minute to prove his fitness.

Wade Small is another player who took a knock at Glanford Park. The former MK Dons winger only returned from a virus from the bench at the weekend but picked up a niggling injury in the draw, and will also undergo a late fitness test.

Mark Beevers missed out in the warm-up to the Scunthorpe match and is another who will be undergoing a late test, but Laws will be hoping his star of the future comes through to mirror his performance in the return clash at Hillsborough which saw Wednesday run out 2-0 winners.

Deon Burton and Ben Sahar have both started up front in recent matches, with the latter bagging the leveller at the weekend, though Bartosz Slusarski will be pushing for his first start following his loan move from West Brom.

The list continues - Richard Hinds, a die hard Owl, will have a late fitness test in the hope of featuring, although Steve Watson could continue at right-back.

Frank Simek, Francis Jeffers, Sean McAllister, Marcus Tudgay, Lee Bullen, Leon Clarke, Etienne Esajas and Akpo Sodje are all still sidelined.

Player to watch: Franck Songo'o

Wednesday may be look towards Richard Wood in the heart of the Owls defence to help keep out the Blades attack, but attack could well be the best form of defence for Wednesday, and in Franck Songo'o they have a man capable of causing problems to any Championship defence, lets hope he's fit eh?

Just don't know what the result is going to be. Got that many feelings about tonight. One minute i fear the worse, then i think a draw would be handy but the next minute i can see us doing them. The latter would be brilliant but a draw i would take now, and as for a defeat, god, don't even want to think about that!!!!! Come on Wednesday. Kick the *****ing winkers all over the park and come back with 3 precious points and let those smelly little fecking piggy *uck wits go home crying!!
will it ever happen
I'm not expecting anything from this with our huge injury list and the fact we never do well there. Anything will be a bonus, they'll be expecting to thump us.
This is revenge time piggy boys. Our last display was shambolic - but you'll see the real blades tonight.
So are we expecting the same from your lot then jonnyblunt?
will it ever happen
jonny, I think you're on the wrong site, you should be on the Pigs site using that kind of language.
I think considering our injury list a draw would be ggod tonight. If Beevers is fit we should be OK at the back. Shame Songo'o might not be able to run them ragged like JJ did at our place - their left back must still be having nightmares about that!
Stop crying about injuries and making excuses for the impending battering you're gonna get. The simple fact is, there's not a single wednesday player that'd make it into the united team.
you say so jonnyboy! and for christ sake stop using the piggy remarks, why not come up with something of your own that actually makes sense and dare i say it is original! you could even have a discussion about it on YOUR OWN SITE if theres anyone on there that is
jonnypig, see you at b*mhole lane, you'll be crying in your swill at 10.00 pm
you will get hammered tonight!! wendy snortbeasts. how many of you partimers are going then? ill say none of you!! about right you poor relation scummy *****ers!!
what a load of b0ll0ck5 dream on you aint done the double over us for 90 years ans im telling you swines it aint guna happen tonight for sure. we on on form. take note of the atmosphere tonight it will better what you are used to by a million miles. swillsborough is crap for atmosphere and yopu wendy boys proved that this season. we WILL send you down!!
Stop your h-owling and calm down. Why would I bother making up new insults, when the classics touch such a nerve.
jonnypig, what a daft comment. Excuse is that half our first team, more could be out. So you could be dishing out a 'battering' to our reserve side.
let be guess when you get hammered like normally against us you will all use the same excusses as always and blame the injurys. just admit it you are the poor relations full stop. deep down you snortbeasts know it!! u keep on bouncing you pr1ck5!!
2-1 to wednesday, you pigs will stop harping on then, eh
Have any of you stopped to think why you've ALWAYS got an injury crisis? Inadequate training facilities or just pushing sub-standard players too hard?
jonnyknob where were you when we battered you earlier in the season? You get a jammy win on Saturday and you suddenly appear throwing your (probably substantial) weight around. Let me guess, you only started following the pigs last season like most of your "fans"a nd now don't know what to do in case you look like the knob that you really are. Let's just see this evening if you can beat our reserve side....
This site is going to be fun, one way or another tonight/tomorrow!
it makes you wonder just who is the poor relation, yes financially us, but why do the piggies seem to always be casting an envious eye over us. They seem to be more interested in how we are doing than their own shower. Coming on here cos their site is ****e as they dont have the brains between them to partake in a reasoned and informed discussion, the fact that their match preview is slagging wednesday in a similar way to an envious school boy who really wishes they were the popular kid. it all stinks of envy and inferiority..... or pig ****, whatever.
2-0 blades beattie and sharpy. easy!!!
Poor relations? Have you taken a look at the rubbish that you've been writing bladesforlife? Obviously a keyboard warrior who isn't out of his teens yet, probably on his lunchbreak at school. You show so much anger towards Wednesday that you have to swear every other word, bless ya...
pigforlife ive allraedy told you i am going tonight..send me a pm and we can get it on hard man!
And when we win tonight i bet all of you piggy w****rs will be hiding tomorrow and for the rest of the week and coming out with the same old crap as you did in January. Just pick your dummy's up and go crawl back to mummy!!
will it ever happen
beattie and sharpy eh! how much almost 6 mill wasnt it? would of thought youd have done a bit better this season with that strikeforce
unlike some of our other fans, i'm just dropping by to say that tonight will be nothing like the game at your place. It will be like a proper derby and i do see us winning but it will be close. Will be a bloody good match though, shame TV people woud rather show the chelsea *****s!
that doesn't mean i'll miss it though, i'll be there
Well PFL you've just provided the perfect example for my point. School playground stuff, "....You started it numpty boy, ner ner" Why dont you make one of those pretty little faces with the tongue sticking out on the end of your next post ;p
Proper derby? As in the last one wasn't because you didn't turn up?
i aggree shepsblade..this will be a different derby to the last one..will be a very close match..although i am one of the lucky few who has a ticket for tonight i am very dissapointed in the allocation you have given to wednesday..i think it will detract from the atmosphere!
Optimistic as ever, i fancy 2-1 Wednesday with Sahar 1st scorer, that's what my betting slip says anyway!! Mind you, given all the players we have out, Utd should be ashamed if they don't beat us, they'll also be desparate to avenge their no-show at Hillsborough so all the pressure is on them, it should be a proper derby as at least we'll show up and give them a game!!
shepsblade take pig4life with ya mate
i canged my mind pigforlife..i dont want a piece of you anymore because i would go down the line for smacking a 12 year old..grow up you ******** idiot!
Have to say I'm all for banter, especially today of all days, but the blatent abuse, non-match related, needs to stop or there will bans in place (BFL)
Can I just say for a start that you're all an ignorant unch of ****wits bandying about the "pig" terminology. Just leave it. It's boring. The fact is, as Blades fans, you expect to be in the Prem (over ambitious). As Wednesday fans, we're cotent with a good season in the Champ (eg, last season). If we lose tonight, which we probably will given our horrendous injury list and the fact that you rightly want revenge for getting d1cked at S6, then it aint gonna send us down. Idiots. I'd be happy with a point. Come on Wednesday you ****ers!
A good post, S6Apple, agree with that. Anything for us tonight will be a bonus, if we lose it ain't the end of the world, we have more pressing matters to contend with, ie avoiding relegation. Defeat with our game in hand ain't exactly going to send us down. If anything, the Blades could keep us up if they get a result against Southampton on the last day :)
abuse??? let me gues you wendy youths dont dish out abuse?? jesus you are the worst ones!!
SuperOwls. I don't need to justify my right to wind you up, but I will...Having been a blades season ticket holder since 1990 ive seen many a derby match. Unlike many of you wendyites, I was actually at Hillsborough for the last derby match. Novel concept I know. Have some respect for yourselves though and save the excuses till after the match
Pigforlife1889, you make me laugh! You come out with the same old garbage every time you make a comment. Do you have anything decent to say at all?
will it ever happen
yes jonnyblade just like you did in january and look were that got you mate!!
banter is good, but this is just ridiculous and i'm not just blaming you lot on here, some of our lot are as much if not more chldish with some of the comments.
i aggree shepblade..i would be embarrassed to be associated with bladeforlife..he couldnt have an intelligent convesation if he tried..mind u what do you expect from a 12 yearold..should be at school!
hey guys..were the best place to park tonight..any ideas?
this format has the potential to be right good, being able to add comments & opinions on other teams pages, it just sometimes gets ridiculous. Are any of the other rival teams as childish with each other?
can you shed anyl ight on the parking for tonight shesblade?
staples! can't park there at weekends but you're ok for night matches or a car park just off Eccy road it's a fiver but reyt handy where it's located
thanks shepblade.
thanks for the parking tip shepblade.
well done sheps why dont you read all the threads before you start pointing the finger!! wendy fans are a one off bread of snortbeast 5hit. anyway ill leave you dole boys to it, some of us have jobs.
Could i get a pint on your sty kop tonight shepsblade?
will it ever happen
no problem. i thought about saying the big car park behind the laver stand in between the ferrari's or even just outside the sportsman but i'm not that cruel.
come on bfl, i never said you, and if you think it is you then you must realise something about yourself. I don't buy into the agressive personal stuff, all that matters to me tonight is thtat we fight on the pitch (not literally) and end up with 3 points.
glad to hear someone has some sense unlike your mate "bread of snortbeast"..whats that all about..must be some new language hes made up!
haha pig 4 life's gettin mardys on!!! u avin 20 bottles of stella again 2nite tramp4life? my arse, you'll be suppin panda pops coz u cant get served 4 alcohol
Nice to hear from a real football fan shepsblade. May football be the winner tonight. oh and wednesday 2-1 please!
shepsblade hats off to you
now then TarnOwl i appreciate that but if only you hadn't spoilt yourself with the 2-1 remark ha
Tickets still on sale for the sty right up until kick off! Look at all those empty seats!
they wont be empty ..they will be full of wednesday fans!
im sittin above wednesday fans, i went to ticket office yesterday no questions asked.
nice one can give me a shout to get out the way when the flares and gob are comming down on us then
Good luck tonight boys (although secretly i don't mean it) hopoing for a good entertainign derby, and predicting a 3-2 Blades win...
