Wednesday vs. Yeovil Town

Hillsborough, Sheffield

Tuesday, January 24

Preview: Owls v Yeovil Town

DEFEAT isn't an option for Wednesday and boss Alan Irvine as the Owls look to bounce back from a 4-0 drubbing at Leyton Orient with a convincing victory against Yeovil at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

Three points are a must for the Owls after Wednesdayites were scathing in their attacks of the manager and the team for their performance at Brisbane Road on Saturday, which sent Wednesday plummeting down to 12th in the npower League One table.

Irvine's men will be favourites to do just that against a Yeovil side they've already beaten in the away fixture earlier this season, but it won't be a stroll in the park - especially if the breakthrough doesn't come early on.

Vital Quotes:

Owls captain Nicky Weaver told the Sheffield Star:

'There are a lot of points to play for. We can't just keep saying that. We have to start winning games.

'We need to get back to basics, defend better at set pieces.

'It's a must-win game on Tuesday, a great opportunity. We have to go out there and show the fans we want to win and put things right.'

Wednesday Team News:

Owls boss Alan Irvine must surely be pondering big changes to the side that got beat 4-0 at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

But he won't have right-back Lewis Buxton and midfielder Tommy Miller available for selection, with both players sidelined with hamstring injuries picked up in the weekend loss in London.

Neil Mellor could be set to return to the starting line-up after Irvine plumped for new signing Gary Madine in attack alongside Clinton Morrison, with little success.

Another new arrival, Mark Reynolds, could be in-line for a debut after being left out of the squad for the trip to Orient.

Wednesday's brittle back-line was torn to shreds on Saturday and Reynolds is expected to get the nod to be included in the back four, while Mark Beevers could also be recalled.

Player to watch: Mark Reynolds

If the Owls new arrival gets his debut in the famous blue and white stripes, the Hillsborough faithful will be keen to see if he can improve a defence that has been struggling all season. He'll also have a bit of pressure on his shoulders if things don't start too swimmingly.

Yeovil Town Team News:

Yeovil will arrive in S6 on the back of a 1-0 home defeat and firmly in the middle of a relegation battle.

The Owls defeated Town at Huish Park in the return leg but Yeovil will be keen to cause a shock at Hillsborough and heap more pressure on Alan Irvine, as well as give their survival hopes a major boost.

They'll be without Jean-Paul Kalala, who serves the final game of a four-match suspension, while defender Craig Alcock could miss out after suffering a back injury.

Player to watch: Dean Bowditch

Yeovil will need striker Bowditch to be on top form if they're to get anything from the trip to S6. Wednesday's defence has been fragile in recent weeks and Bowditch will only be too aware of the fact.

I see there is speculation we are looking at purchasing another winger. It baffles me why big Al has not purchased a tough central midfielder. This seems to me to be the glaring problem we have - a midfiled that is easily pushed aside. I do hope we win tonight.

Agree, anybody with eyes can see we are lacking a quality midfielder to push/improve on coke and miller. Potter and o'conner just arent good enough, despite the latters efforts. Hope AI realises the pressure he's now under and sets us up for an all out attacking performance and positive result.

hear hear!! Quality central midfielder and a winger with some flair required urgently. As for Irvine, I have been reserved in my view of sacking him up until the disgrace of a performance at the weekend. If we do not get a comfortable win tonight then I think he should walk!

Any possible rumors about a midfielder, even? Time is really ticking now with less than a week left in January.

Do you guys think that AI doesn't know what he wants? He's been in pro football for more years than I even was - and I can give him more than a decade in age! Knowing what is required and finding the right guy who is actually available are entirely different scenarios! And do you also think that those 9 players who were signed in the Summer would be here now if we had got MMs purchasing power? Of course many of them would not be. Shut up moaning and support AI now! If it doesn't work in the long run then we have a Chairman who knows how to sort it. The prolonged spiral downwards of SWFC started with the dismissal of Trevor Francis and it was the so called 'supporters' that helped to precipitate that paticular mistake! Si get behind the manager and the team tonight and save those 'boos' for that other Sheffield Team, whatever they are called!

Not good enough in the slightest and please don't blame the re-taken penalty for the loss. Possession of 48% at home to a team in the drop-zone who went down to 9 men in the second half. What does that say about the tactics of a certain Mr Irvine?

Get behind what?? We had an issue with beating teams around us, now we've got an issue with beating ANYONE!! How do you get behind a manager who masterminds 6 goals against and 1 point against Yeovil and Leyton Orient?? I understand teams need time to gel, but at this standard? With our squad? Come on, lets say it how it is, this aint good enough and we wont be going up this season at this rate!

I have never called for a SWFC manager to be sacked, but its just not working for AI, he has to go! All the positivity of the MM takeover has been drained away, a new manager will have the normal honeymoon which might just be enough to get a play-off spot. With AI I can honestly say i would be concerned about religation

Plus point for Madine scoring on his home debut though! Still only four points off play offs too! We're definitely not going up automatically but if we can just get out of this rut, I fancy us to be there or there abouts at the end of the season which will hopefully give us a good grounding for next! I've got total faith in MM and his decision making process so lets see? I dont see how it will ever work out under Irvine though! But who's the alternative?!?! Wrote the season off a long time ago anyway!
Owls That!

MM kinda painted himself into a corner, though... saying that he's back AI through the month. None-the-less, I think that AI will be packing by the end of the weekend, if not sooner. I like him, good bloke, but results are results and we're just not getting them. I read on Sky that we're looking at Cook from Palace... Anyone know anything about him? Coming for Warnock, I'd be a bit worried about getting a Torjan Horse from the old blunt *ha!*
