Peterborough United vs. Wednesday

London Road, Peterborough

Tuesday, February 1

7.45pm

Preview: Peterborough v Owls

Wednesday will be looking to put a woeful January behind them as they kick-start February with a tough-looking trip to promotion-chasing Peterborough United.

The Owls failed to win a league game in January - both of their victories came in the FA Cup - and slid down to 12th in the npower League One table as a result.

The pressure is on boss Alan Irvine to start claiming wins - and wins against their promotion rivals, of which they've failed to do so far this season.

Three points at London Road would go a little way to showing Irvine is up to the task of guiding the Owls back into the promotion race this season, but it won't be easy against a Posh side sitting on the edge of the play-offs.

Peterborough United Team News:

Posh will be boosted with the return of influential captain Grant McCann from suspension. McCann is set to return straight into the starting eleven as Posh aim to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat at Colchester United at the weekend.

Lee Frecklington has also returned from a long-term ankle injury and could win a place in the Peterborough midfielder after featuring as a late substitute in Saturday's match.

Darren Ferguson has also signed goalkeeper Paul Jones on loan from Exeter, and the stopper could go straight into the squad for the visit of the Owls.

Player to watch: James Wesolowski

The former Leicester City midfielder is key for Posh and will provide the ideal midfield battle for Owls new-boy Isaiah Osbourne. Wesolowski was tipped for big things with the Foxes before his progress fell a bit flat, but he's more than a match for most midfielders at League One level.

Wednesday Team News:

Wednesday boss Alan Irvine could give a debut to on-loan Aston Villa midfielder Isaiah Osbourne, after the midfielder penned a deal from the Barclays Premier League club on Sunday.

Osbourne has been out of favour at Villa and will see a move to Hillsborough as the chance to revive a career that promised so much when he arrived on the scene.

A defensive-minded midfielder, Osbourne should add some much-needed protection to the back four and add some bite to the midfield.

Irvine will have to decide whether to stick with Clinton Morrison and Paul Heffernan in attack. The strike pairing worked well in the 4-2 defeat of Hereford United in the FA Cup at the weekend.

But Irvine could favour a return of Gary Madine to the starting eleven after he was cup-tied for Saturday's clash with the Bulls.

But midfielder Tommy Miller and defender Lewis Buxton are both definitely out through injury.

Player to watch: Isaiah Osbourne

The on-loan midfield man is set to make his debut for the Owls since moving to the club on-loan from Aston Villa on Sunday. Owls fans will be keen to see if he's the man Wednesday have been desperately missing in the middle of the park - let's hope so.

What's your starting XI predictions? Weaver Reynolds, Morrison, Johnson, Jones Sedgwick, Osbourne, Coke, Teale Madine, Morrison
TheDon1974
i'd probably put jj in for sedgwick other than that pretty much the same. Irvine needs at least a draw to keep people off his back.
DEZZYP
I was tempted to put JJ in but Irvine will want to play it a bit tighter with us being away I reckon!
TheDon1974
true. part of me thinks thats whats getting him in a little bother though, a little safety first. he had a good second half against hereford, i'd stick with him and hope for the same.
DEZZYP
He only came to life when they went a man down. Time he stepped up to the plate and did it from the first minute. If he dont grow a pair he will only ever be an impact player.

easy posh win and go 4th!

you live by the water ? if so fall in ;-)

I was just thinking - Weaver, Reynolds, Morrison, Johnson, Jones, Sedgwick, Osbourne, Coke, Teale, Madine, Morrison - all players brought in this season. Isn't that interesting, TheDon1974 ? What a transformation our team has gone through...

weaver, reynolds, morrison, johnson, jones, johnson, coke, o'connor, teale, heffernan, morrison i know reynolds isn't a right back but michael morrison can play right back if need be and put reynolds at centre half. morrison and heffernan looked tight on saturday and I'd let this grow, madine wasn't in the game on tuesday and i'd use him from the bench to start with

Thought it was 4-1 v Hereford not 4-2 lol. For me id go Weaver,Jones,Johnson,Reynolds,Morrisson,Teale,Osbourne,Coke,JJ,Heffernan,Madine.Team full of pace with a target man upfront and a goal scorer in Heffers.

I know how much we need a win tonight to start closing the gap on the top two and to get back into the play-offs, but i only can see us struggling. Our performances of late have been very poor and i'm going for a Posh victory, 2-1 :(
will it ever happen
Just heard the team what a joke of a manager, 5 changes he's lost it big style.
ecco owl
can't see how we can make 5 changes including both centre forwards and teale. unless they pulled up bad after saturday. still what do we know lets see what happens
Hirsty's Shinpads
lewis buxton definitely out with injury, but he is in the starting 11!
Hirsty's Shinpads
3-2 up at half time :O And with the team he's picked!! I was ranting and raving when i saw the team but upto now i think he's got it just right! :)
will it ever happen
Wot a surprise Heffers dropped agen, and i dont think any of us predicted this team.
ollyowl70
I've said it once and I'll say it again SACK only one way we are going......

Can all those who hounded Darren purse out of the club now apologise!!! How can we score 3 away from home, and lead 3 times and still concede 5! Do we not do defending in training! Also, for the first 10 or 12 games of the season wehad best defence in league, with DP, what's gone wrong?
Bexy1977
Totally dissappointed wot the hell happened.
ollyowl70
I don't think we'd be doing a great deal better if Purse was still playing for us. The problem is we are trying to incorporate 3 new defenders at the wrong time of the season. Usually when this many players are signed there is a full pre-season to integrate them into the playing style. Halfway thought he season this isn't the answer!!
TheDon1974
Oh and RatherRandomOwl I didn't realise that my team selection contained all new players this season alone. Maybe this is why we're not performing on a consistent basis?!

it is the wrong time of the season to incorporate 3 new defenders into a back 4. i didn't want purse out as he was for me the one who held a weak defence together. without him we have no organisation, in fact we couldn't even maintain a line on saturday and i assume the same happened here. peterborough average 3 goals scored in every home game
