The KC Stadium
The Owls will travel to Hull full of confidence after boss Paul Sturrock agreed a new contract deal which will see him remain at the club until 2010. Sturrock had warned any doubt about his future will make the club unstable, but that doubt was put to bed yesterday afternoon.
But the Tigers will also be aiming for the full three points from the fixture after picking up their fisrt victory of the season in midweek with new-signing Michael Bridges netting the decisive goal in a 1-0 win at Leicester City.
Wednesday are unbeaten away in the league this season, conceding just one penalty on their travels and securing five points from three games - and Hull are yet to win on home soil, so it should make for an interesting match!
Paul Sturrock told the official SWFC site:
'We've done very well away from home this season. I do feel we deserve maybe two more points than we've got out of the [away] games. Anyone who was at Southend the other day will appreciate there is a progression in our performance.
'There will be a real edge to them. They've got a couple of new strikers in and one of them scored the winner the other night. They will feel they've kick-started their season but we've got to go and dampen all their ardour.'
'Preston North End were on the same pointage as us two games ago. They're now lying fourth after two wins. It's important to appreciate that if we can put some wins on the board we're going to climb this league. We've got to make sure we work as hard as we did at Plymouth, Southend and Preston.'
The Tigers are all set to welcome new-signing Danny Mills in to the side after the former Leeds United and England defender agreed a two-month loan deal with the club, with Manchester City stating he wasn't part of their first team plans.
New striker Nicky Forster will be sidelined with a groin problem but fellow new-boy Michael Bridges is set to continue in the Tigers attack after netting the superb winner at Leciester City in midweek.
Some positive news for the Tigers is that defender Danny Coles could return to action after recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury, but will undergo a late fitness test.
Hull have had a poor start to season and it was no co-incidence that their first victory came through a magnificent Michael Bridges goal at Leciester in midweek. Bridges had a tough time at Sunderland and Leeds United but now seems to be getting his career back on track after a superb stint with Carlisle United, and Bridges will be hoping his progression continues at the KC Stadium tonight.
Paul Sturrock's main injury concern will be with improved midfielder Glenn Whelan who limped off in the midweek clash with Stoke City with a hip injury. Sturrock revealed Whelan would be a worry for tonight's match. But Steve Adams is likely to return after being rested for the midweek match, and could replace Whelan. Adams came through his first game of the season at Southend United last weekend unscathed.
Meanwhile, Lloyd Sam will also have a late fitness test after picking up a dead-leg against Stoke in midweek. Sam is halfway through his month-long loan deal at Hillsborough and will be wanting to impress in front of the Sky cameras.
Marcus Tudgay may also be rested after returning from injury at Southend United at the weekend. Should the former Derby man feature tonight it will be his third game in six days - and Sturrock may not want to risk his long-term future for the sake of tonight's game.
Kenny Lunt could also make a return to first-team action after featuring as a substitute in the Owls' previous two games. The injury to Whelan could mean Sturrock is ready to throw the former Crewe man in from the start to offer some valuable options in attack.
Steven Maclean, Yoann Folly, Peter Gilbert, Drew Talbot, Wade Small and Barry Corr are all still sidelined.
In a game the Owls will want to win, they may have to rely on the defensive abilities of Algerian international Bougherra to keep the hungry Hull attack at bay. Bougherra has been exceptional in the Owls matches this season and will need to continue his impressive partnership with Graham Coughlan in the heart of the Owls defence if they want to keep their unbeaten away record intact.
Last Time Out:
Hull City 1-0 WEDNESDAY
10th December 2005 - KC Stadium
A Leon Price goal three minutes from time gave the Owls little Christmas cheer as they fell to defeat for the first time at the KC Stadium despite dominating long periods of the game. The result left the Owls deep in trouble without a win in six matches.
