Wednesday 2-1 QPR

Brian Laws' make or break double substitution helped Wednesday come from a goal behind against a rejuvenated QPR side and bag a vital three points in the battle against the drop at a rain-soaked Hillsborough.

The Owls were being met with a chorus of booing for the majority of the first half, in which they played some of their worst football of the season, but the double switch of Deon Burton and Sean McAllister on for Enoch Showunmi and Ronnie Wallwork respectively re-kindled in the Owls' players to inspire them to a much-needed victory.

Wednesday were still reeling from the controversial 1-0 defeat to promotion-hopefuls West Brom in midweek and it was clear to see in the opening exchanges.

Laws included new loan signing Frank Songo'o in the starting eleven to replace Jermaine Johnson - suspended for four matches for his midweek red card - while Ronnie Wallwork came in to the midfield to replace the suspended Adam Bolder.

Both teams observed a minutes' applause for former Owls legend Derek Dooley before the match.

And it was Wednesday who made the brighter start to the match as Showunmi tested QPR stopper Camp with a long-range header while Graham Kavanagh also launched a low effort goalbound as the Owls' got off to a positive start.

Frank Songo'o put in a superb first-time cross dangerously across the face of goal but his team-mates were slow to react and the danger was cleared by the visitors, although the Owls faithful were happy with the opening.

But from then on Rangers took control, playing some nice football before Rowan Vine raced away to give Damien Delaney the chance to open the scoring on 15 minutes.

The goal visibly deflated Wednesday and the hosts struggled to string two passes together for a long spell in the first half as Rangers came closer and close to extending their lead and putting Wednesday in even more relegation worries.

Patrick Agyemang almost doubled the visitors lead, with the pitch not helping as he turned Beevers before toe-poking an effort against the woodwork to the relief of the Wednesday defence.

The Owls' faithful started to get frustrated with the poor passing and determination on show from their charges but Enoch Showunmi almost got a leveller against the run-of play after being put through on goal but he couldn't beat his marker for pace and the danger was cleared.

But the turning point came on 40 minutes when Laws made a brave double sub with Showunmi and Wallwork being replaced by Burton and McAllister respectively, and the changes immediately gave the hosts a boost.

But it was Songo'o who carved out a neat flick to put Kavanagh through on goal for him to head the ball over Camp and in to the back of the net to give the Owls the vital breakthrough just minutes before the break.

Half-Time: Wednesday 1-1 QPR

Instead of a chorus of booing greeting the Owls when they came off at the break, a round of applause met them, and the renewed confidence was there for all to see on the restart.

But it was the Owls' number one who had to be at the top of his game on the restart as Agyemang saw an effort from a tight angle well deflected to safety by Grant.

The decisive moment came just six minutes after the restart as Camp saved Tudgay's header but let the ball from his grasp in to the path of McAllister who darted in to the box and was felled by the QPR stopper with the referee pointing at the spot.

And the super-sub duo was complete as Burton took control of the ball, placed it on the spot, and calmly slotted the ball in to the back of the net to give the Owls an advantage they were to never let slip.

The goals gave Wednesday fresh confidence and they looked a different side in the second half as they looked in control of the clash and had the better chances to extend their lead and make the game safe.

Kavanagh went close for Wednesday with a free-kick before the confidence came through Tudgay with a superb long-range effort which drifted just over the bar after the Owls' hitman spotted Camp off his line.

The best chance for the visitors went to former Wednesday target Dexter Blackstock, who saw his close range effort brilliantly saved by the in-form Grant.

Songo'o had a superb free-kick whistle by the post late on as Wednesday looked to put the icing on the cake, and the new loanee was subject of some rash challenges late on from the visitors, which saw sub Hogan Ephraim sent off for a dangerous challenge, while the Rangers bench disgraced themselves as the final whistle blew following further bad challenges on the Owls' winger.

Full-Time: Wednesday 2-1 QPR

Wednesday: Grant; Hinds, Beevers, Wood, Spurr; Songo'o, Wallwork (McAllister 39), Kavanagh, Small (O'Brein 90); Showunmi (Burton 39), Tudgay. Unused substitutes: Burch, Boden.

They need a wake up call 5 mins before a match starts. Againts Ipswich, Cardiff and QPR we were lifeless in the 1st 20-30 mins. Why does it take us so long to wake up? I think Mcallister is ready and able for a 1st team spot. He offers eagerness to the midfield. I'd also like to praise Sean McAualy - for his efforts in youth development - All we need now is Luke Boden rattling in with a few goals, lol

I'd love to be in the championship next year and sign songo'o on a season long loan. First impressions are he's got quick feet, good delivery and an amazing amount of skill. On another note - any see the fighting on the supertram before the game? - that was just crazy.

you don't spell bobbaa like that, answers on a postcard!! but yes he is total and utter poo, we have struggled with him in the side, hope this is a sign of better things to come, once we started to play like a team that wants to win we made the game ours and the fans will support that forever and a day

Should have been 3-0 down when Laws made the substitutions. However, totally inspired swaps. Laws is right about it not just being Wallwork and Showunmi though, pretty much everyone was terrible. Kavanagh was having an awful game but he woke up when they did the change. Should have had more in the 2nd half. Would like to see that team start tuesday.

First 39 minutes were absolutely awful. The balance was all wrong in the middle. Kav & Wallwork are the same player, just Wallwork is far worse(!) Showumni deserves to be sent back to Bristol early. Absolutely awful. Why hasn't Laws brought Burton back sooner? Did they have a spat?? Surely proven his worth yesterday. From the 40th minute onwards, we were a different team. Looks like we've found a replacement for Whelan in Mcallister. Awesome. Gave balance to the middle of the park and made Kav good again. Did brilliantly to earn the penalty. Tudgay & Burton a proven partnership. Spirited performance in the last half. Songo'o is awesome an all. Will hopefully give JJ something to sweat about. I'm a very happy Owl. Now, just need to keep the momentum going and get 6 points from the Colchester and Coventry games. Must wins

My ratings for the Wednesday players; Grant 6. Another steady game but rarely had to do much at all as QPR never threatened in the second half. Spurr 6. Steady. Nothing special. Made some more of his surging runs down the flank but just wish he could put a decent ball in the box after making one of those runs. Wood 7. Solid and a very good game. We do have one of the best defenders in the league and have improved at the back since he has come back from injury. Beevers 7. Another top game from our young star. For a big lad he has some skill on him but just worry one day it will catch him out. Hinds 6. Also steady and didn't do much wrong. But with Simek coming back i can see him keeping the bench warm. A bit hard on him but the others are just that little bit better. Songo 7. Couldn't see nothing in him at first but his second half performance was very good. Great ball to set up Kav's goal. Plenty of skill and look forward to seeing him play again. At least he can get the ball in to the box and can shoot not like JJ. Kavanagh 5. Shocking first half but did score and did take it well. Better the second half but does give the ball away far too often. Put some good crosses and corners into the box for a change. Could have had a second but his free-kick was very well saved. Wallwork 1. A complete waste of space as was rightly took off after 39 minutes. Just shows that he and Kav cannot play along side each other. Both the same in how they play. Small 5. Stinker of a first half and did nothing at all. Got the ball a lot more in the second half and wasn't to bad. Came off late on with cramp. Tugay 7. Another good display. Ran his socks off and puts in 110%. Deserved a goal for his efforts. Showunmi 1. If he isn't back at Bristol this morning he should be! An absolute joke. Has never been a footballer. With his size and power he should be brushing other players off and winning every ball in the air but can't do either. Think that made Laws's mind up when he was through and only had the keeper to beat but decided to turn back into 2 of their defenders. Taken off after 39 minutes and rightly so! Subs used; Burton 7. Changed the game when he came on. For me should have started because he and Tudgay work so well together. Won most headers and his first touch is excellent. Well taken penalty. Hope this gives him some much needed confidence? McCallister 7. Had a very good game when he came on for Wallwork. Put himself about and put some good challenges in. Won the penalty which was a penalty. O'Brien 5. Came on in the last few minutes but obviously no impact. Match rating 6. The worst 39 minutes of football i have seen down there for some time. Was like watching a Sunday League game. But the change that Laws made after 39 minutes changed the whole game. After that QPR never got a look in. A much needed win and more important was the three points. Referee rating 6. Has quite a decent game i thought. Far better than the Prem refs we get some times.
will it ever happen

I think you are being a bit kind to Hinds there mick, he got ripped to bits I would have given him an average 5, burton and tuggers got to start on tuesday, I couldn't believe the difference when the two boys came on burton actually jumps and heads the ball unlike showumni who is only about 6 foot 6 and could get beat in the air by my 7 month old daughter, get rid of wallwork what a waste of space just as bad as lenny, good to hear jeffers and simek nearly back and esajas, just seen no sheringham tomorrow for colchester so hopefully we will get the three points!!
